Is Trump The World's Newest Dictator Like Democrats Say?

Governor’s Race Takes Another Turn

Wisconsin’s race for governor took another dramatic turn Saturday after Democratic Gov. Tony Evers officially endorsed Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, just one day after Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez unexpectedly ended her campaign.

The endorsement comes as Democrats scramble to unite ahead of the Aug. 11 primary in one of the nation’s most competitive gubernatorial contests. With Republicans hoping to flip the governor’s mansion this November, the race is expected to draw national attention.

Evers, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek another term, praised Crowley as the Democrat best prepared to continue his administration’s agenda while addressing the concerns of Wisconsin families.

Evers Throws Full Support Behind Crowley

In a statement posted on X, Evers urged Wisconsin voters to rally behind Crowley, describing him as a proven leader with the experience and judgment needed to serve as the state’s next governor.

The governor said Wisconsin needs a leader who understands the challenges facing working families, makes difficult decisions when necessary, and is committed to delivering results rather than political drama.

Evers also noted that while Sara Rodriguez remained in the race, he deliberately avoided endorsing any candidate because he wanted Democratic voters to hear directly from each contender before making their decision.

Now that Rodriguez has withdrawn, Evers said he believes Crowley is the strongest candidate to keep the governor’s office in Democratic hands.

Crowley Relaunches Campaign

Crowley officially re-entered the race during a Saturday news conference, saying Democrats cannot afford to nominate someone who lacks statewide experience, a proven governing record, or the coalition necessary to defeat Republicans in November.

He warned supporters that the stakes are simply too high to take unnecessary risks in such a closely divided state.

Crowley said those concerns ultimately convinced him to revive his campaign after previously suspending it to support Rodriguez.

His return immediately reshapes the Democratic primary and gives voters another experienced option heading into the final weeks before Election Day.

Sara Rodriguez Ends Campaign

Rodriguez had been widely viewed as one of the Democratic Party’s leading candidates to replace Evers.

However, her campaign came to an abrupt end after she disclosed significant errors involving campaign finance reporting.

The lieutenant governor said the reporting problems would likely become an ongoing distraction and concluded that stepping aside was the best decision for both her campaign and the Democratic Party.

Her withdrawal dramatically changed the political landscape and opened the door for Crowley’s return.

Democratic Primary Becomes More Competitive

Crowley now joins a crowded Democratic field that includes:

  • Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes
  • State Rep. Francesca Hong
  • State Sen. Kelda Roys
  • Former Department of Administration Secretary Joel Brennan

The Democratic nominee will likely face Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, who has received President Donald Trump’s endorsement and is expected to mount a strong general election campaign.

Political observers expect the Wisconsin governor’s race to become one of the most closely watched statewide elections of 2026.

Democrats Continue Internal Battle

State Rep. Francesca Hong welcomed Crowley’s decision to return to the race, saying competitive primaries give voters a meaningful opportunity to debate Wisconsin’s future.

Still, Democrats enter the primary facing growing internal divisions between establishment leaders and the party’s progressive wing.

Recent elections have shown increasing momentum for progressive candidates in several states, creating uncertainty over which direction Democratic voters will ultimately choose.

Before Rodriguez exited the race, a June WisPolitics/State Affairs straw poll showed her leading the Democratic field, while Hong finished second. Crowley’s return is expected to significantly reshape those standings.

Wisconsin Race Rated a Toss-Up

Political analysts believe Wisconsin remains one of the nation’s premier political battlegrounds.

The Cook Political Report currently rates the Wisconsin governor’s race as a Toss-Up, indicating neither party has a clear advantage heading into the general election.

With Evers stepping aside, Democrats searching for a new standard-bearer, and Republicans hoping to capitalize on the open seat, Wisconsin voters are likely to decide one of the most closely watched governor’s races in America this fall.
