Republicans Turn Their Back on Trump
In a recent survey conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, it was revealed that nearly half of the Republicans surveyed expressed their reluctance to vote for former President Trump if he were to be convicted of a felony. Specifically, 45 percent of Republicans stated they would not vote for him, while 35 percent said they would still support him. The remaining 20 percent remained unsure about their voting preference in such a scenario.
According to The Hill, the former President is facing multiple legal challenges, with his recent indictment on federal charges related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and retain power. However, Trump has maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to the four-count indictment, which includes charges of conspiracy to defraud the U.S., among others.
Previous to this, Trump had been indicted on 34 felony counts in Manhattan for falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment made in 2016. Additionally, he faced charges over mishandling classified documents and obstructing the government’s efforts to recover them.
Despite these legal issues, Trump still enjoys significant support within the Republican Party. Over half of the Republicans surveyed (53 percent) believed he acted appropriately on January 6, 2021, and an equal percentage (52 percent) supported his repeated claims of election fraud. A majority (61 percent) of Republicans viewed Trump’s judgment on January 6 as flawed but not criminally liable for the Capitol attack, and a significant 75 percent perceived the charges against him as politically motivated.
Surprisingly, Trump continues to lead the pack in the race for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, with 47 percent of Republicans stating their support for him in the primary. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trails far behind with 13 percent, while former Vice President Mike Pence and conservative entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy stand at 8 percent and 7 percent respectively.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted on August 2-3 with a sample size of 1,005 U.S. adults, had a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.
Republican voters should remember that Trump is the victim of the democratic witch hunt in order to prevent him from winning the presidency again in 2024.
