Ocasio-Cortez’s Plan To Destroy Supreme Court

Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the “Squad,” criticized the U.S. Supreme Court on Sunday, accusing it of an “abuse of power.” She expressed her disagreement with the court’s recent landmark decisions that rejected affirmative action and President Biden’s student loan debt plan. Ocasio-Cortez suggested the possibility of impeachment and subpoenas to limit the authority of the justices.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Ocasio-Cortez stated, “The Supreme Court is exceeding its authority. We should discuss judicial review as a means to check the powers of the courts.”

The Supreme Court concluded its term last week, making several decisions that included rejecting the consideration of race in admissions, ruling in favor of a Christian web designer who declined to create same-sex wedding websites, and striking down President Biden’s plan to cancel student loan debt. Democrats viewed these rulings as attacks on progressive values and criticized the court as “illegitimate.”

Ocasio-Cortez expressed concern about these decisions, stating, “These rulings indicate a worrisome progression toward authoritarianism and the concentration of power within the courts. Justice Elena Kagan herself has acknowledged that the court is assuming legislative powers.”

Ocasio-Cortez has been an advocate for court-packing and limiting the court’s authority. She even suggested the possibility of subpoenas and impeachment during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash. The congresswoman emphasized the need for stricter ethical guidelines to address potential violations by Supreme Court members, referencing Justice Clarence Thomas’s refusal to recuse himself from cases involving his wife and the events of January 6.

“I believe that if Chief Justice Roberts does not willingly appear before Congress for an investigation, we should consider issuing subpoenas. We must also conduct investigations and establish comprehensive ethical guidelines to address misconduct, overreach, and abuse of power within the Supreme Court. The court has not been subjected to sufficient oversight, jeopardizing its own legitimacy and endangering our democracy,” Ocasio-Cortez argued.

In contrast to Ocasio-Cortez, President Biden clarified his position against expanding the Supreme Court during a recent interview on MSNBC. He expressed concerns that progressive attempts to expand the court would perpetually politicize it in an unhealthy manner.

Biden said, “I believe that some members of the court are beginning to realize that their legitimacy is being questioned in unprecedented ways.”

After the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action, Ocasio-Cortez attracted attention when she criticized the court’s “absurd claims of colorblindness” and suggested that legacy admissions should have been abolished. However, critics pointed out that the issue of legacy admissions was not specifically addressed in the court’s ruling.
