Someone is gearing up for what looks like a presidential run.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is getting new national attention after revealing that he has lost 80 pounds while using a GLP-1 medication — a major personal transformation arriving as questions continue to surround the Democratic governor’s possible political future.
Pritzker, 61, discussed his weight-loss journey during a CBS interview released Monday, saying he began taking a GLP-1 medication about two years ago after being diagnosed with diabetes.
The Illinois governor said the treatment has helped him achieve something he had struggled to accomplish for much of his life.
But with the 2028 presidential election already generating speculation about potential candidates, Pritzker was also pressed about whether his dramatic weight loss had anything to do with preparing for a possible White House campaign.
Pritzker denied that his health transformation was motivated by presidential politics.
“I’ve been driven my whole life to lose weight,” Pritzker told CBS.
He added that he has not made a decision about what he may do politically in the future and said his immediate focus remains serving Illinois and running for another term as governor.
When asked specifically about the possibility of running for president in 2028, Pritzker said he is focused on what is best for the people of Illinois.
For now, that means one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent governors is leaving the question of 2028 unanswered.
JB Pritzker Reveals 80-Pound Weight Loss
Pritzker said he has struggled with his weight since childhood.
According to the governor, he has been overweight since approximately seven or eight years old and has spent much of his adult life attempting to manage his weight and health.
His concerns are also deeply connected to his family history.
Pritzker’s father, Donald Pritzker, died from a heart attack at age 39 while playing tennis. Pritzker was only seven years old at the time.
The governor recalled that his father had been physically active despite being overweight.
The experience left a lasting impression.
As he grew older, Pritzker said he paid close attention to his health and bloodwork. He also developed an exercise routine that includes four-mile walks along Chicago’s Lake Michigan shoreline.
Eventually, however, he received news that prompted him to consider another approach.
Diabetes Diagnosis Led Pritzker to GLP-1 Medication
Pritzker said he was diagnosed with diabetes approximately two years ago.
According to his account, his physician subsequently recommended a GLP-1 medication.
The governor has not publicly identified which specific GLP-1 drug he takes.
GLP-1 medications have become increasingly well known in recent years because certain drugs in the category are prescribed for Type 2 diabetes or chronic weight management, depending on the medication and individual patient.
Pritzker said the medication quickly changed the way he thought about food.
He recalled noticing within several days that some of the urges to eat that he had previously experienced were no longer as strong.
Still, the governor emphasized that his 80-pound transformation did not happen overnight.
Pritzker said he lost approximately two pounds during his first week before gradually continuing to lose weight over roughly two years.
He has not disclosed his current weight.
Why the Weight Loss Is Fueling 2028 Questions
Pritzker’s transformation is attracting attention for reasons extending beyond health.
The Democratic governor has developed a growing national profile, and reporters have repeatedly questioned him about whether he could seek his party’s presidential nomination in 2028.
His physical transformation has added another element to that speculation.
There is precedent for politicians making major lifestyle changes before presidential campaigns, although weight loss by itself provides no evidence that someone intends to seek the White House.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, for example, underwent weight-loss surgery several years before launching his unsuccessful campaign for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush also attracted considerable attention for losing weight before entering that same presidential race.
Pritzker, however, says his situation is about his personal health.
He told CBS that being able to lose weight with the assistance of a GLP-1 medication has meant a great deal to him.
Is JB Pritzker Running for President in 2028?
At this point, Pritzker has not announced a 2028 presidential campaign.
He also did not definitively rule one out during the CBS interview.
Instead, Pritzker said he has not made decisions about what he will do in the future and emphasized his current responsibilities in Illinois.
That leaves the question unresolved.
The 2028 presidential election remains more than two years away, and potential candidates have considerable time before making formal announcements.
Until Pritzker makes such an announcement, reports about a presidential campaign remain speculation rather than confirmation.
Pritzker Is Running for Re-Election in Illinois
While his national plans remain uncertain, Pritzker has been clear about his more immediate political objective.
He is running for another term as governor of Illinois.
Pritzker has served as Illinois governor since January 2019 and has increasingly attracted national attention through his public disagreements with President Donald Trump and his role within Democratic politics.
Those political clashes have helped raise Pritzker’s profile beyond Illinois and contributed to continuing questions about whether he eventually wants to seek national office.
For now, however, Pritzker maintains that Illinois remains his priority.
Illinois State Workers Have Access to Certain Weight-Loss Drugs
Pritzker also discussed Illinois’ coverage of GLP-1 medications for state workers.
Illinois requires health plans participating in the State Employees Group Insurance Program to cover medically necessary injectable medications prescribed for glucose control or weight loss for qualifying adults diagnosed with conditions including obesity, prediabetes or gestational diabetes.
That coverage requirement took effect July 1, 2024.
There are eligibility requirements, and participants receiving covered weight-management medication are required to enroll in a lifestyle management program to maintain coverage.
Pritzker told CBS that approximately 55,000 state employees are covered by the state insurance program offering GLP-1 benefits.
He argued that providing access to the medications could potentially reduce health-care expenses over time if patients experience improved health outcomes.
Whether those projected savings ultimately materialize will depend on factors including medication costs, participation and long-term patient outcomes.
Pritzker Calls the Experience “Life-Changing”
Pritzker described his own experience with the medication in positive terms.
He encouraged people considering GLP-1 drugs to discuss the issue with their doctors, noting that his experience should not replace professional medical advice.
For him, however, the change has been significant.
The governor said losing 80 pounds has made him feel considerably different than he did before beginning treatment.
That personal story is now intersecting with a much larger political question.
Pritzker remains a nationally recognized Democratic governor who has frequently challenged President Trump, and questions about the party’s potential 2028 presidential field are unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
But despite the renewed attention surrounding his weight loss, Pritzker has not announced a campaign for president.
For now, his confirmed political campaign is in Illinois — while the question of whether his ambitions eventually extend to the White House remains unanswered.
