President Donald Trump says Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may already have her eyes on the biggest prize in American politics — the White House.
Trump predicted Friday that the New York Democrat could run for president in 2028 while accusing prominent progressives of trying to distance themselves from controversial positions on crime, policing and immigration.
The comments could offer an early glimpse at a political battle that may unfold long after the 2026 midterm elections are over.
And if Trump is right about Ocasio-Cortez’s presidential ambitions, her past positions could quickly become a major issue.
Trump Predicts AOC Will Run in 2028
During an interview with Fox News correspondent Alexis McAdams, Trump was asked whether he believes Ocasio-Cortez is preparing for a presidential campaign.
Trump said he believes she will run.
Ocasio-Cortez has not announced a 2028 campaign and has not committed to seeking the presidency. She has also kept much of her public attention focused on the upcoming midterm elections.
Still, speculation surrounding her political future has been growing.
As one of the most recognizable members of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, Ocasio-Cortez would almost certainly enter any presidential contest with substantial national attention.
But Trump believes there is a major vulnerability waiting for Democrats like her: their political record.
Trump Says Democrats Are Running From Their Old Positions
Trump argued that progressive Democrats are attempting to distance themselves from policies and rhetoric that became prominent during the social unrest and political upheaval surrounding 2020.
“If you really look at it, they’re all saying the same thing,” Trump said.
He accused Democrats of trying to move away from their previous rhetoric on crime while also pointing to sanctuary-city policies as an example of an issue that could become difficult to defend before a national electorate.
That matters because public safety and immigration have become major political battlegrounds.
For Republicans, tying today’s Democratic candidates to the most controversial ideas promoted by the progressive left could become a powerful campaign strategy heading into future elections.
AOC Confronted Over the Left’s “Woke” Era
Ocasio-Cortez recently faced questions about that history during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”
During the interview, Jonathan Karl raised controversial past statements from Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong, a fellow socialist.
Ocasio-Cortez responded by recalling a saying from a local city councilman: “Woke 1 was crazy.”
She then argued that voters should focus on what political candidates are saying today.
That response is significant because some of the most controversial ideas associated with the progressive movement emerged during the period surrounding 2019 and 2020.
Activists and politicians debated or promoted proposals involving police funding, cash bail, immigration enforcement and sweeping changes to the criminal justice system.
Republicans have spent years reminding voters about those positions.
Now Trump appears determined to make sure they aren’t forgotten.
Trump Goes After Sanctuary Cities
Trump specifically targeted sanctuary jurisdictions, which generally restrict certain cooperation between local authorities and federal immigration enforcement.
“I think you’re going to see sanctuary cities start to end, because sanctuary cities are a disaster,” Trump said.
He also connected Ocasio-Cortez to support for sanctuary policies and argued that such policies contribute to crime.
Immigration enforcement has remained one of Trump’s signature political issues, and sanctuary-city battles have repeatedly put his administration at odds with Democratic officials in major cities and states.
For conservative voters concerned about border security, illegal immigration and public safety, those disagreements could play a major role in determining how they view a potential Ocasio-Cortez presidential campaign.
Cash Bail Could Become Another Political Liability
Trump also returned to the issue of cash bail.
The president has long argued that policies limiting or eliminating cash bail can allow dangerous suspects back onto the streets while their cases move through the courts.
Supporters of bail reform argue that people who have not been convicted of a crime should not remain incarcerated simply because they cannot afford to pay.
Critics, however, contend that some reforms have gone too far and can make it more difficult to keep potentially dangerous defendants behind bars.
That debate isn’t going away.
If Ocasio-Cortez eventually launches a presidential campaign, Republicans would almost certainly examine her record on criminal justice and policing in detail.
Could AOC Really Run for President?
Ocasio-Cortez has built a national following since arriving in Congress in 2019.
She is also closely associated with the Democratic Party’s progressive movement and is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Those connections have helped make her enormously influential among progressive activists while simultaneously making her a frequent target for conservatives.
A presidential campaign would expose both sides of that political identity to far greater scrutiny.
Republicans would likely highlight her previous statements on policing, immigration, government spending and other progressive priorities.
Ocasio-Cortez, meanwhile, could argue that voters should judge her according to the policies she supports today rather than every proposal associated with the broader progressive movement.
Trump’s Warning Could Be a Preview of 2028
Trump’s prediction raises a bigger question for Democrats.
Can politicians who rose to prominence during the progressive movement of the past several years successfully reposition themselves for a nationwide electorate?
Winning a Democratic congressional district is one thing. Winning voters across swing states and politically diverse communities is something entirely different.
Trump appears to believe Ocasio-Cortez understands that challenge — and that Democrats are already adjusting their message accordingly.
Whether AOC actually runs for president remains unknown.
But if she does enter the 2028 race, her political history could become one of the first things Republicans put under the microscope.
And Trump is already signaling exactly where he intends to look.
