Kamala Makes New Endorsement

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is stepping into one of the most important Senate races of the 2026 midterm elections, endorsing Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed as Democrats fight to regain control of the U.S. Senate during President Donald Trump’s second term.

El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman backed by Trump, in Michigan’s November 3 general election.

The matchup could become a major test of whether Michigan voters want to strengthen Trump’s Republican majority in Washington or send another Democrat to the Senate.

It will also put El-Sayed’s progressive political record under a much brighter national spotlight.

Harris Endorses El-Sayed After Narrow Primary Victory

El-Sayed, a physician and former Detroit health director, secured the Democratic nomination after narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in Tuesday’s primary.

As the final votes were being tallied, El-Sayed held a 14,893-vote advantage over Stevens, with less than one percentage point separating the two candidates.

Rogers faced no opponent for the Republican nomination.

Following the Democratic primary, Harris announced her endorsement and immediately framed the Michigan election around economic issues and control of Congress.

Harris argued that families across Michigan continue to face financial pressure from the cost of groceries, gasoline, housing, health care and child care.

She also criticized Trump and congressional Republicans over their tax policies, claiming the GOP has prioritized tax relief benefiting wealthy Americans.

Republicans have repeatedly argued that lower taxes, reduced regulation and pro-growth economic policies can encourage investment, create jobs and strengthen the broader U.S. economy.

El-Sayed Targets Trump and Mike Rogers

El-Sayed welcomed Harris’ endorsement and made clear that President Trump will play a significant role in his campaign strategy.

The Democratic nominee argued that winning Michigan is essential if Democrats hope to regain control of the Senate.

He also accused Trump and his political allies of dividing Americans and portrayed Rogers as closely connected to the president’s political agenda.

Trump captured the state during the 2024 presidential election, proving Republicans can win statewide with the right coalition of voters.

But Republicans simultaneously suffered a narrow defeat in Michigan’s 2024 Senate election.

Rogers lost that contest to Democrat Elissa Slotkin by roughly 19,000 votes.

That razor-thin outcome means both parties have reason to believe they can win in 2026.

For Rogers, the new campaign offers an opportunity to finish what he came close to accomplishing two years earlier.

For Democrats, it presents a challenge: Can they continue winning Michigan Senate elections even with Trump-backed Republicans making gains elsewhere in the state?

Progressive Democrats Line Up Behind El-Sayed

Harris joins several nationally prominent progressive political figures supporting El-Sayed.

His supporters include Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

El-Sayed’s campaign also lists endorsements from the United Auto Workers, National Nurses United, Indivisible and the Working Families Party.

Health care is one area where voters could see a significant philosophical difference between the candidates.

El-Sayed has campaigned in favor of Medicare for All, an approach that would dramatically expand the federal government’s role in providing health coverage.

Supporters argue such a system could guarantee health coverage and reduce certain costs for families.

Critics have raised concerns about government spending, taxation, private insurance options and the potential disruption involved in fundamentally restructuring the American health care system.

Republicans can counter by emphasizing lower taxes, domestic energy production, deregulation, private-sector investment and other policies associated with Trump’s economic agenda.

For older Americans living on fixed incomes or preparing for retirement, inflation and the purchasing power of their savings could be especially important considerations.

That makes the Michigan Senate election more than another partisan battle in Washington. It is also a debate over two very different approaches to taxes, health care, government spending, energy, foreign policy and the economy.

Rogers and El-Sayed Offer Michigan Voters a Clear Choice

The contrast heading into November is becoming increasingly difficult to miss.

Rogers is a Trump-backed Republican and former congressman who came within approximately 19,000 votes of winning a Michigan Senate seat in 2024.

El-Sayed is a progressive Democrat supported by Harris, Sanders, Warren, Ocasio-Cortez and major progressive organizations.

El-Sayed’s primary victory demonstrated that progressive candidates can command substantial support among Michigan Democratic voters.

The bigger question is whether that agenda can win over enough independents, moderates and swing voters in a state Trump carried in 2024.

November Election Could Reshape Washington

Michigan voters will have the final say on November 3.

And the consequences could reach far beyond the state’s borders.

A Republican victory could strengthen Trump’s position in Washington and make it more difficult for Democrats to regain control of the Senate.

A Democratic victory would preserve a critical seat for the party and improve its chances of assembling a Senate majority capable of challenging the Trump administration.

With Harris now officially backing El-Sayed and Trump supporting Rogers, Michigan is shaping up to become one of the clearest political showdowns of the 2026 midterm elections.

For voters, the choice will involve much more than political personalities.

Taxes, inflation, health care, Medicare, government spending, energy policy, national security and the future balance of power in Washington could all be affected by the outcome.
