Talk about getting a slap on the wrist.
Northern California prosecutors have filed misdemeanor charges against Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in connection with a traffic accident that took place earlier this month.
The Napa County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday that the 86-year-old has been charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run following a July 3 crash involving an unoccupied parked vehicle.
According to prosecutors, Pelosi allegedly struck the parked vehicle before leaving the scene without stopping to provide the required information. Authorities later located him a short distance away from the crash site.
The charges include one misdemeanor count for failing to stop after a collision, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in county jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. Prosecutors also charged Pelosi with making an unlawful turn.
Pelosi is scheduled to appear in Napa County court on August 14, when he is expected to answer the charges.
Authorities Say Alcohol Was Not a Factor
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office previously stated there is no evidence that alcohol contributed to the July 3 collision. Pelosi was not arrested at the scene.
Investigators reported finding Pelosi’s vehicle with significant damage that they said was consistent with the recent crash.
The incident involved only property damage, and no injuries were reported.
Family Says Pelosi Accepted Responsibility
A representative for the Pelosi family said after the incident that Paul Pelosi personally reached out to apologize to the owner of the parked vehicle.
According to the spokesperson, Pelosi assured the vehicle owner that he would take responsibility for the damage caused during the collision.
The family has declined to provide additional public comments while the legal case proceeds.
Previous DUI Conviction Draws Renewed Attention
The latest charges have renewed public attention because Pelosi has faced legal issues involving driving in the past.
Pelosi previously admitted guilt in a 2022 DUI case stemming from a separate crash in Napa County. He was sentenced to five days in jail, placed on probation, and ordered to pay fines and other penalties.
While the current case does not involve allegations of impaired driving, the previous conviction has become part of the broader public discussion surrounding the new charges.
Public Reaction
The case has generated significant reaction across social media and political circles.
Some critics argue that public officials and their family members should be held to the same legal standards as every other American and say they will closely watch how the case is handled.
Others caution against drawing conclusions before the court process is complete, emphasizing that the charges remain allegations until they are resolved through the judicial system.
What Happens Next
Pelosi’s first court appearance is scheduled for August 14. During that hearing, the court will address the misdemeanor charges and determine the next steps in the case.
As the legal proceedings continue, the case is expected to receive national attention because of Pelosi’s connection to one of the country’s most recognizable political families.
For now, prosecutors have outlined the allegations, while Pelosi will have the opportunity to respond in court. The outcome of the case will ultimately be determined through the legal process.
