Democrat Attacks Trump Over July 4th
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore is criticizing President Donald Trump’s decision to hold a major Independence Day celebration on the National Mall as dangerous heat blankets Washington, D.C.
Speaking during an interview on Happening on The Hill, the Democratic governor argued that no public official should expect Americans to endure extreme weather conditions simply to attend a political speech or public event.
“I don’t believe people should have to sacrifice their health just to hear a speech,” Moore said.
Instead, Moore said he chose to deliver Maryland’s Independence Day address virtually from the State House, allowing residents to celebrate from the comfort of their homes.
“We’re asking people to watch from home through our livestream,” Moore explained. “It’s important that people pay attention to the weather, stay hydrated, and listen to what Mother Nature is telling us. If changing plans helps keep people safe, then that’s something leaders should consider.”
His comments come as much of the Washington metropolitan area experiences temperatures above 100 degrees during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Forecasters have warned that the combination of extreme heat and high humidity could create dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended periods outdoors.
Despite the forecast, President Trump is still expected to headline a major Independence Day event on the National Mall as part of the nationwide America 250 celebration marking the country’s 250th anniversary.
Heat Forces Changes To Holiday Events
The scorching temperatures have already disrupted several planned events.
The Great American State Fair, a 16-day patriotic celebration taking place on the National Mall, temporarily closed Friday afternoon because of the dangerous heat. Organizers later announced that the event would reopen at 5 p.m. once conditions became safer for visitors.
The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures that could reach 102 degrees on Independence Day, along with the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms.
Officials have repeatedly urged anyone attending outdoor celebrations to prepare for the intense weather by drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight clothing, and taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
Officials Stress Safety Preparations
Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser also encouraged visitors to use caution throughout the holiday.
She urged people attending the festivities to stay hydrated, monitor the heat, and head home after the fireworks display concludes.
Federal and local officials say extensive safety measures have already been put in place for the National Mall events.
D.C. Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly Sr. said organizers have worked for months to ensure that hydration stations and drinking water are available throughout the secured event areas.
Those preparations are intended to help thousands of visitors safely enjoy the holiday celebrations despite the unusually hot conditions.
As Americans gather to celebrate the nation’s birthday, officials continue encouraging everyone attending outdoor events—including President Trump’s rally—to monitor weather conditions, drink plenty of water, and seek shade whenever possible.
