This is one of Trump’s biggest domestic issues.

Millions of Americans hitting the road for Memorial Day weekend are facing unusually high gas prices, adding new financial pressure for families already dealing with elevated living costs across the country.

According to projections from AAA, more than 39 million Americans are expected to travel by car during the holiday weekend, making it one of the busiest Memorial Day travel periods in recent years.

The increase in fuel prices comes amid ongoing instability in global energy markets. Rising tensions involving Iran and disruptions to key shipping routes have contributed to higher crude oil prices, creating ripple effects for consumers nationwide.

Drivers in several states are now paying some of the highest fuel prices seen in years. West Coast states continue to experience the steepest costs, with California and Washington reporting some of the most expensive gasoline prices in the nation.

Meanwhile, East Coast and Midwestern drivers are also seeing significant increases at the pump. Even Southern states, which traditionally enjoy lower fuel prices, have experienced steady increases heading into the summer travel season.

The White House has introduced several measures aimed at easing pressure on consumers. President Donald Trump authorized additional releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and backed proposals designed to improve fuel distribution and lower transportation costs.

The administration also temporarily relaxed certain shipping restrictions to help move fuel supplies more efficiently between U.S. ports as energy markets remain volatile.

Despite those efforts, many Americans continue to feel the impact of rising transportation and energy expenses.

Beyond gasoline, diesel prices have also climbed sharply over the past year. Since diesel fuel powers much of the nation’s trucking and shipping industry, higher costs can eventually affect grocery prices, retail goods, and other everyday essentials.

Energy analysts continue monitoring the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping corridors. Any additional supply disruptions in the region could place further pressure on global energy markets during the busy summer months.

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, fuel prices are once again becoming a major economic issue for voters concerned about inflation, household budgets, and the overall direction of the economy.

For many travelers this Memorial Day weekend, the rising cost of filling up the tank serves as another reminder that economic concerns remain front and center for millions of American families.
