The USS Gerald R. Ford, the most powerful aircraft carrier ever built, returned to Naval Station Norfolk on Saturday after completing a record-setting 11-month deployment that demonstrated the strength, endurance, and global reach of the United States military.
The nuclear-powered carrier spent 326 days at sea, making it the longest deployment for an American aircraft carrier in the post-Vietnam era. During that time, the ship and its strike group supported critical military operations in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East.
For the nearly 5,000 sailors aboard the Ford and its accompanying warships, the homecoming marked an emotional reunion with family members after almost a full year away.

Longest Aircraft Carrier Deployment in More Than 50 Years
The USS Gerald R. Ford set a modern record with 326 consecutive days deployed. According to the U.S. Naval Institute, only two Vietnam-era carriers were deployed longer:
- USS Midway — 332 days in 1973
- USS Coral Sea — 329 days in 1965
The Ford’s deployment underscores the increasing demands placed on the U.S. Navy as global tensions continue to rise.
Mission Included Operations Against Iran and the Capture of Nicolás Maduro
The deployment began in June when the carrier sailed to the Mediterranean Sea. In October, the strike group was redirected to the Caribbean as part of a major naval buildup near Venezuela.
In January, the carrier supported the successful operation that resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro.
Soon after, escalating tensions with Iran sent the Ford toward the Middle East, where it participated in the opening phase of U.S. combat operations before transiting the Suez Canal and entering the Red Sea.
These missions highlighted America’s ability to project overwhelming force anywhere in the world when national security is at stake.
Crew Overcame Fire and Major Repairs While Deployed
The historic mission was not without challenges.
A fire in one of the carrier’s laundry areas forced hundreds of sailors from their berthing compartments and required significant repairs while the ship was docked in Souda Bay.
Despite the setback, the crew remained focused and completed every assignment with professionalism and determination.
