Here’s what the Trump administration is doing now.
Vice President JD Vance traveled to North Carolina on Friday, delivering a strong message about President Donald Trump’s economic agenda as Republicans fight to maintain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
Speaking to supporters in Rocky Mount, Vance focused heavily on the cost of living and economic recovery, two issues that continue to dominate voter concerns across the country.
“The affordability crisis Americans faced was created under Joe Biden,” Vance told the audience. “Meanwhile, President Donald J. Trump has helped put about $1,300 back into the pockets of the average American family.”
The visit highlights how important North Carolina has become in the fight for control of the Senate and House.
Cost of Living Remains a Top Issue for American Voters
Across the United States, voters consistently rank inflation and rising living costs among their biggest concerns heading into the November 3 midterm elections.
From groceries and housing to energy bills and healthcare, many Americans say their household budgets remain under pressure.
During his speech, Vance argued that the Trump administration’s economic policies are beginning to reverse the financial strain many families experienced in recent years.
“During the Biden presidency, the average American family lost about $3,200 in purchasing power,” Vance said. “In just over a year under President Trump’s leadership, families have gained around $1,300.”
Supporters say those gains are tied to tax relief policies, regulatory reforms, and pro-growth economic strategies pushed by the administration.
Trump Administration Highlights Signs of Economic Improvement
Vance also pointed to several economic indicators the White House says show progress under President Trump’s leadership.
According to the vice president:
- New home purchases have reached their highest level in five years
- Rent prices have declined for six consecutive months
- Interest rates have fallen to levels last seen during Trump’s previous term
- Families in North Carolina could receive average tax refunds of about $3,700
“These policies are designed to help working Americans keep more of their own money,” Vance told the crowd.
Polls Show Voters Still Worried About the Economy
Despite the administration’s optimistic outlook, many Americans remain cautious.
A recent Fox News poll found that only 30% of voters view the economy positively, while a majority still express concerns about everyday expenses such as:
- Grocery prices
- Housing costs
- Utilities
- Healthcare
- Gasoline
Administration officials say some price pressures, particularly at the gas pump, are linked to global instability and the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has affected international energy markets.
Vance: Trump Is “Impatient” to Restore Economic Growth
During the rally, Vance emphasized that President Trump remains focused on accelerating economic improvements.
“My friends, President Trump is one of the most impatient people I’ve ever met,” Vance said. “He’s constantly pushing us to move faster and do more for the American people.”
Vance added that after just one year, the administration believes it is already taking meaningful steps toward rebuilding the American Dream.
North Carolina Senate Race Could Decide Control of Congress
North Carolina is expected to be one of the most competitive states in the country during this year’s midterm elections.
The race for the Senate seat currently held by retiring Republican Sen. Thom Tillis is drawing national attention.
Primary elections earlier this month set up a major contest between:
- Roy Cooper, the former Democratic governor of North Carolina
- Michael Whatley, former chairman of the Republican National Committee
Both parties see the seat as critical to determining which party controls the U.S. Senate after the election.
House Race Also Emerging as a Major GOP Opportunity
In addition to the Senate race, Republicans are targeting several competitive House districts in North Carolina.
Vice President Vance criticized Democratic Rep. Don Davis, who is seeking re-election in one of the state’s most closely watched congressional contests.
Republican challenger Laurie Buckhout, a military veteran, won the GOP primary earlier this month and will face Davis in a rematch of their 2024 race, which Davis won by just 1.5 percentage points.
With such a narrow margin last time, many political analysts expect the race to be one of the tightest House battles in the country this year.
Midterm Elections Could Shape Trump’s Agenda
As the midterm elections approach, both Republicans and Democrats are increasing campaign activity in key battleground states like North Carolina.
For Republicans, the stakes are clear: maintaining control of Congress would help ensure that President Trump’s economic and policy agenda continues moving forward.
For voters, the election may come down to a single question — which party they believe can best address the rising cost of living and strengthen the American economy.
