Democrat Gains More Support
A growing Democratic primary fight in Maine is drawing national attention after Martin Heinrich endorsed progressive candidate Graham Platner in the race for the U.S. Senate.
The endorsement adds new momentum to Platner’s campaign as Democrats prepare for what could become one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country.
Platner is hoping to win the Democratic nomination and challenge longtime Republican incumbent Susan Collins in the upcoming general election.
Democratic Primary Is Heating Up
Heinrich praised Platner’s campaign, arguing the Marine Corps veteran represents the kind of candidate Democrats need to reconnect with working-class voters.
According to Heinrich, Platner has the potential to help Democrats rebuild support among Americans who feel ignored by Washington politics.
Platner, a 41-year-old Marine veteran and oyster farmer, is running on a populist platform that includes progressive economic policies and opposition to long-running U.S. military conflicts overseas.
However, Platner faces strong competition in the Democratic primary.
His biggest rival is Janet Mills, who entered the race with significant name recognition and support from Democratic leadership in Washington.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has already thrown his support behind Mills, highlighting divisions within the Democratic Party over who should challenge Collins.
Progressive Support Builds
Platner’s campaign has also received backing from several prominent progressive politicians.
Among them are Ruben Gallego and Vermont independent Bernie Sanders.
Their endorsements signal that Platner has strong support from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Following Heinrich’s endorsement, Platner posted online that he was honored to receive support from a future Senate colleague and said he hopes to work together on issues such as reducing foreign military involvement and expanding government health programs.
Early Polling Shows Tight Race
Recent polling suggests the Democratic primary could be highly competitive.
A survey conducted by the Maine-based Pan Atlantic Research firm between February 13 and March 2 found Platner leading Mills among likely Democratic primary voters.
The poll showed Platner with 46 percent support compared to Mills’ 39 percent among 367 likely voters.
Maine’s Democratic primary election is scheduled for June 9, meaning the contest is likely to intensify in the coming months.
The same poll also tested potential general election matchups.
Among 810 likely voters statewide, Platner narrowly led Collins 44 percent to 40 percent in a hypothetical race.
A separate matchup between Mills and Collins showed both candidates tied at 44 percent each, suggesting either Democrat could face a competitive contest in November.
Controversial Past Comments Resurface
Despite the positive polling numbers, Platner’s campaign has also faced criticism over controversial comments he posted online in previous years.
Media reports last year highlighted a series of offensive remarks Platner made on Reddit over the past decade.
Some of the posts included harsh language about various groups of Americans and comments that critics described as offensive.
Platner later addressed the issue publicly and disavowed the remarks.
He said the comments were written during a difficult period in his life while he was dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder following his military service in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Social Media Incident Raises Questions
The campaign also faced questions recently after Platner briefly shared a social media post about tensions with Iran that originated from controversial online commentator Stew Peters.
The post criticized the idea of another Middle East conflict.
Platner’s campaign later removed the repost and said staff members had not initially realized who had originally shared the video.
A spokesperson for the campaign said the post was deleted immediately once the source of the clip became clear.
A Senate Race With National Stakes
With Sen. Collins seeking another term and Democrats battling for their nominee, the Maine Senate race is shaping up to be a major political contest.
Collins has long been considered one of the most durable Republicans in the Senate and has repeatedly won support from Maine voters across party lines.
Democrats, however, see an opportunity to challenge her seat if the political environment shifts heading into the election.
The outcome of the June primary will determine which Democrat ultimately takes on Collins in what could become a high-profile Senate showdown.
