Speaker Johnson Brushes Off Musk’s Threats
Washington, D.C. — House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) isn’t backing down in the face of recent criticism from billionaire Elon Musk over the GOP’s bold new spending bill. In an exclusive interview Friday, Johnson made it clear: the Republican Party is focused on delivering results for everyday Americans — not chasing approval from tech moguls.
“We’re going to win either way — because our policies are winning,” Johnson told Fox News’ Jesse Watters Primetime.
The comments come as Elon Musk, once a major Trump donor, publicly criticized the spending legislation championed by President Trump and congressional Republicans. Musk, who helped bankroll Trump’s 2024 victory, has since soured on the bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination.”
But Johnson isn’t taking the bait.
“I like Elon. I respect him. But I believe he’s been misled about what’s actually in this bill,” the Speaker said. “I’ve been texting with him personally to clear the air.”
Trump vs. Musk: A Conservative Clash
The fallout between Musk and Trump exploded this week, with Musk threatening to launch a third party and even making wild claims about the president’s name appearing in Epstein-related documents — claims Trump has strongly denied.
In response, President Trump warned he might sever federal contracts tied to Musk’s companies if the attacks continue. The feud has generated headlines, but Speaker Johnson says it’s a distraction from what really matters.
“The president is moving on. He’s laser-focused on border security, fighting inflation, and putting America First,” Johnson said. “And so are House and Senate Republicans.”
Why Conservatives Back the GOP Spending Bill
At the heart of the disagreement is the Republican-led spending package aimed at reviving the economy, cutting Biden-era waste, and strengthening national defense. Musk claims the bill increases the national debt — but Johnson says the truth tells a different story.
“If you’re a hardworking American trying to make ends meet, this bill is for you,” Johnson explained. “We’re cutting bureaucratic bloat, investing in veterans, and bringing jobs back to the heartland.”
Musk recently stepped down as a top adviser to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), raising further questions about his shifting political loyalties.
Still, Johnson says the Republican mission hasn’t changed.
Looking Ahead to 2026
With the 2026 midterms on the horizon, Johnson believes the GOP’s focus on real issues will resonate — especially with older Americans who’ve suffered most under Democrat-led inflation and crime waves.
“All boats are going to rise,” he said. “Seniors, families, small business owners — they’ll all feel the impact of what we’re doing here.”
