This was shocking to see.
Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has strongly criticized an upcoming visit by Second Lady Usha Vance and Trump’s National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, describing it as a “dangerous” and “aggressive provocation,” according to local reports.
The White House announced that Second Lady Usha Vance, accompanied by one of her sons, plans to tour Greenland, exploring historical landmarks, experiencing local traditions, and attending the famous Greenlandic dogsled race. The delegation also includes Waltz, one of former President Donald Trump’s closest allies, raising speculation about potential political motivations behind the trip.
“This isn’t merely a casual visit from a political spouse,” Egede told Greenland news outlet Sermitsiaq. He questioned, “Why else would Trump’s most trusted national security advisor visit Greenland? It’s clearly a demonstration of political power, designed to send a message.”
The criticism emerges amid renewed calls by Trump for the United States to annex Greenland, emphasizing the strategic value of the Arctic island for national security. Recently, Trump confidently stated during discussions with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, “I think it will happen.”
Greenland’s political landscape recently shifted after Egede’s left-wing party lost elections to the conservative Demokraatit party, which supports independence from Denmark. Despite their conservative stance, the new leadership has openly criticized Trump’s interest in Greenland, labeling him a “threat to political independence.”
Egede has publicly appealed to international allies for vocal support against what he considers escalating American pressure. “If allies continue whispering instead of publicly supporting us,” Egede warned, “the U.S. will intensify its pressure. Our allies must speak clearly and stand firmly with Greenland.”
In response to the upcoming high-profile visit, Danish authorities have heightened security measures, a standard precaution for visits by senior U.S. officials.
