Trump Endorses Who For Governor?
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) recently kept his cards close to his chest when asked about a potential run for Florida governor in an interview on NewsNation’s “The Hill.” While he didn’t reveal any firm details about his plans, Donalds did express deep gratitude for receiving an early endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
When asked about his future political aspirations, Donalds stated that there were a number of factors to consider before making a decision but that he appreciated the support from Trump. He emphasized his commitment to advancing Florida’s interests, saying, “If we do decide to take that step, it will be about elevating Florida to new heights.”
Trump, a significant figure in the Republican Party, threw his support behind Donalds earlier in the week, calling him a “rising star” and a strong ally in Washington. In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Donalds for his leadership qualities and unwavering dedication to the America First agenda, highlighting his focus on securing the southern border, strengthening national security, supporting veterans, boosting the economy, and defending the Second Amendment.
In the interview, Donalds mentioned that he and his team were still in the process of discussing his potential candidacy. He also acknowledged the widespread encouragement from supporters both in Florida and across the nation. “I’m really appreciative of the support from President Trump and the many people reaching out,” he said.
Before Trump’s endorsement, a Florida-based poll conducted by Victory Insights showed Donalds in the lead in a hypothetical Florida governor’s race, securing 31 percent of support. Other potential candidates, including Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez and Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, trailed far behind with only single-digit support.
While Donalds hasn’t made an official announcement, he has been making strategic moves to prepare for a statewide campaign. He has been meeting with donors and recently added Trump’s pollster, Tony Fabrizio, to his team. A source familiar with the situation told The Hill, “There’s a lot of excitement on the ground about him potentially running.”
The upcoming race will also reveal whether Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose term as governor ends in 2027, will endorse anyone in the contest. Donalds and DeSantis have had a somewhat strained relationship, with Donalds endorsing Trump in 2023 before DeSantis officially launched his presidential bid. Nevertheless, Donalds praised DeSantis’ leadership, stating, “Governor DeSantis has done a great job for Florida,” while emphasizing that it would soon be time to select a new governor.
As the political landscape in Florida continues to evolve, all eyes will be on Rep. Donalds and his potential gubernatorial bid. Whether or not he enters the race, he has certainly sparked a buzz among Republican voters, eager to see fresh leadership in the Sunshine State.
