Top Republican Refuses To Run For McConnell’s Seat

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) has confirmed that he will not be running for the open Kentucky Senate seat in 2026 after Sen. Mitch McConnell, the long-serving Republican leader, announced that he would not seek re-election. Comer, a prominent figure in Kentucky politics, made it clear that his focus is elsewhere for now, though he hasn’t ruled out a future run for governor.

“I’ve been very clear that I’m not running for the Senate,” Comer stated in a recent interview with The Hill. “Maybe down the road, a run for governor could be in the cards, but for now, the Senate seat is not something I’m pursuing.”

McConnell, who has been a key player in shaping conservative policies in Washington, revealed in a floor speech that he would not seek an eighth term in the Senate. He has served the state of Kentucky since 1985 and was a dominant force in Republican leadership, guiding the GOP through many significant battles. At 83 years old, McConnell’s recent health challenges, including a fall that left him in a wheelchair, have led him to step aside from the political stage after 40 years in office.

Comer, who has worked closely with McConnell on Kentucky-related issues, expressed his respect for the senator’s dedication to his state. While Comer admitted that he did not always agree with McConnell on issues like foreign policy and federal spending, he acknowledged McConnell’s skill in handling constituent concerns and his long-standing commitment to Kentucky.

Although McConnell’s decision has opened the door for others to step forward, Comer refrained from picking favorites in the race. Republican Rep. Andy Barr and former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron have both expressed interest in running for the seat. Comer, who counts both men as friends, said he will remain neutral for the time being.

As the 2026 election looms, the race for McConnell’s seat will undoubtedly be one of the most closely watched contests in the country.
