Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) has officially resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives as he prepares to take on a critical new role in President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet. Waltz will be assuming the position of National Security Adviser, a post that does not require Senate confirmation, meaning he will immediately be part of the administration once Trump is sworn in.
Waltz’s resignation, announced early on the morning of January 20, came just hours before Trump’s inauguration. His departure shifts the House balance to 218 Republicans and 215 Democrats, ensuring a narrow margin as Congress begins the new session.
Appointed by Trump on November 11, Waltz has served Florida’s 6th District since 2019, where he earned a reputation as a staunch advocate for national security. During his time in the House, he was a key member of the Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, and Intelligence Committees, and became known for his outspoken stance on global threats posed by China, Russia, Iran, and international terrorism. Trump praised Waltz as an “expert” in these areas and as a strong supporter of his “America First” foreign policy agenda.
Waltz has been a vocal critic of President Biden’s handling of global security, particularly regarding Ukraine and the growing threat from China. His hawkish approach also extends to his support for Israel’s defense against Hamas and his concern about the strategic importance of Greenland. Waltz has emphasized the role of critical minerals, energy resources, and military presence in the Arctic as vital components of U.S. national security, especially with rising Chinese influence in the region.
Reflecting on the momentous occasion of Trump’s return to office, Waltz likened it to a “Reagan moment,” citing parallels to the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, and expressed optimism that Trump’s leadership will secure peace and safety for America and its allies. As Waltz transitions to this high-profile role, his influence on national security policy is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
