Trump Hold Emergency Meeting With Speaker Johnson
As the House prepares for Friday’s Speaker election, Speaker-designate Mike Johnson (R-La.) is making strategic moves, including a crucial meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on New Year’s Day. Johnson revealed the plans in an interview with News Radio 710 KEEL, saying they would map out a strategy ahead of the upcoming vote. The meeting underscores the importance of solidifying support within the party as Johnson works to secure his position in the tight Speaker race.
Initially, Trump had planned to announce his endorsement of Johnson on New Year’s Day, but the two agreed to move up the timing to earlier in the week. Trump took to Truth Social to express his full support, offering what he called his “Complete & Total Endorsement” of Johnson. In the post, Trump emphasized the need for Republican unity and action, saying, “LET’S NOT BLOW THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN.” He also noted the urgent need to reverse the damaging policies of the Biden administration, positioning Johnson as the leader who can bring about the change America desperately needs.
Trump praised Johnson’s character, calling him a “good, hard-working, religious man” who would do the right thing and help the GOP continue to win. Trump further assured his backing, offering to make calls on Johnson’s behalf if necessary to help secure his election as Speaker.
Despite Trump’s strong endorsement, Johnson’s path to victory remains uncertain. With the House holding a slim Republican majority, Johnson can only afford to lose one vote from his party. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has already announced he will vote against Johnson, and other Republicans such as Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas), Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), and Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) have yet to commit. With such a narrow margin, Johnson will need to rally as many Republicans as possible to ensure he secures the Speaker’s gavel.
