GOP Bashes Mayorkas Over Drone Issue

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) has sharply criticized Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of the recent drone sightings in New Jersey and New York, calling his approach “just wrong.” The two appeared on ABC’s This Week on Sunday to discuss the ongoing mystery of drones flying over the Garden State, which has raised concerns among local residents and lawmakers.

Mayorkas, in his remarks, stated that DHS is actively investigating the unusual drone activity and is calling for increased federal resources to deal with the issue. While Christie agreed that more resources are needed, he argued that the government’s response has only fueled unnecessary fear and confusion. “I agree that they need more authority, but to say this isn’t unusual activity is simply wrong,” Christie said. He emphasized that, having lived in New Jersey his whole life, this was the first time he had ever witnessed drones flying over his home.

Christie acknowledged the challenges of the modern age, where the public’s desire for immediate answers can lead to the rapid spread of conspiracy theories. However, he stressed that the lack of transparency from both state and federal authorities is at the root of the growing anxiety among residents. “If you don’t provide clear information to the public, people start to fill in the blanks with their own theories,” he said.

The debate has taken a political turn as members of Congress weigh in. Representative Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.) suggested the drones could be linked to Iran, though the Pentagon has dismissed that claim. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has also called for more detailed explanations from Mayorkas. Despite these differing opinions, Christie believes that both the Biden administration and state authorities must step up communication. He pointed out that in a time of global uncertainty, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, the presence of drones could understandably raise alarms, especially if people fear they might be carrying weapons.

Christie’s frustration is shared by many New Jersey residents, who have reached out to him asking for answers. “The people in my state want to know what’s going on,” he said. “The government, at both the state and federal levels, needs to be more vocal and transparent.”

As for the federal response, DHS has stated that it is continuing to address congressional oversight and is working to provide further clarity on the situation. Governor Phil Murphy (D-N.J.) was briefed by the FBI on Sunday and assured the public that the state is ready to collaborate with the federal government to investigate the sightings.

In Christie’s view, the real issue isn’t just the drones themselves but the failure of both the state and federal governments to communicate effectively with the public. As the situation unfolds, it’s clear that the American people deserve better answers and a more decisive response from their elected officials.
