Houston Mayor Now Investigating Trump’s ICE
Houston Mayor John Whitmire is calling for an independent investigation after a fatal encounter between federal immigration officers and a longtime Houston resident during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation.
The Democratic mayor said Friday that city officials will continue seeking answers despite facing significant obstacles because federal agencies currently control the evidence tied to the case.
The incident has drawn national attention as the Trump administration continues its aggressive immigration enforcement efforts, with local officials, federal authorities, and prosecutors now conducting separate investigations.
Houston Officials Say Access to Evidence Is Limited
During a Friday press conference, Whitmire said he instructed Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz to take a proactive role in reviewing the shooting of 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
However, the mayor argued that local investigators have been unable to conduct a full examination because the federal government has custody of the vehicle, witnesses, and other evidence normally reviewed during an officer-involved shooting.
“The FBI has control of virtually all the evidence that would typically be part of a Houston Police Department investigation,” Whitmire said, adding that local officials have received limited access.
Whitmire said his administration intends to continue pressing federal authorities for greater cooperation.
DHS Says ICE Was Conducting Targeted Immigration Operation
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the shooting occurred Tuesday morning during a targeted ICE enforcement operation intended to arrest an illegal immigrant.
Federal officials have since acknowledged that Salgado Araujo was not the person agents were attempting to apprehend.
Authorities said the driver attempted to evade officers and allegedly used his vehicle in a manner that threatened federal agents.
Passengers traveling inside the van, along with the family’s attorney, strongly dispute that account.
Salgado Araujo, who had reportedly lived and worked in the Houston area for nearly 35 years, was driving members of his construction crew to a job site when ICE officers stopped the vehicle.
After being shot in the abdomen, he was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
Family Disputes Federal Account
Attorney Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, representing Salgado Araujo’s family, rejected the government’s description of the incident.
According to the attorney, the construction van never struck or attempted to strike ICE agents and officers were never in immediate danger.
Federal investigators have not publicly released body camera footage, dashboard video, or other evidence that could clarify exactly what occurred during the encounter.
Multiple Investigations Now Underway
Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz is expected to meet with FBI officials next week in an effort to obtain additional evidence and improve cooperation between federal investigators and local law enforcement.
Whitmire said city officials remain committed to pursuing every available avenue to participate in the investigation.
Meanwhile, Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare confirmed that his office has launched its own review, noting that investigations are standard procedure whenever an officer-involved shooting results in a death.
Teare said prosecutors hope the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Inspector General will voluntarily provide evidence but emphasized that his office will continue collecting information regardless.
Investigators are also asking anyone who witnessed the incident or recorded video of the encounter to come forward, as no publicly available body camera or dashboard camera footage has been released.
Protests Follow ICE Shooting
The shooting sparked demonstrations in Houston, where hundreds of protesters gathered in the Magnolia Park neighborhood to voice opposition to ICE operations and demand greater transparency.
The case has renewed debate over immigration enforcement, cooperation between federal and local authorities, and how officer-involved shootings involving federal agents should be investigated.
Supporters of stronger border enforcement argue that ICE officers often face dangerous and unpredictable situations while carrying out immigration operations. Critics, meanwhile, say mistaken-identity cases underscore the importance of transparency and independent oversight.
Why This Matters
The fatal shooting is likely to remain under intense public scrutiny as separate investigations continue at the federal, county, and city levels. Until additional evidence is released, key questions about the encounter remain unresolved.
As the Trump administration continues prioritizing immigration enforcement nationwide, the outcome of this investigation could shape future discussions about accountability, federal law enforcement procedures, and cooperation with local officials.
