President Donald Trump showed once again that his endorsement remains one of the most powerful forces in Republican politics.
Just hours after Trump publicly backed Congressman John James in Michigan’s governor’s race, one of James’ biggest Republican rivals abruptly suspended his campaign and threw his support behind the Trump-endorsed candidate.
The stunning development highlights the enormous influence Trump continues to wield as Republicans prepare for critical midterm elections across the country.
On Monday, Trump announced his endorsement of John James, calling the Michigan congressman an “America First” conservative who can lead the state in a new direction.
In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump praised James and offered his complete support for the campaign.
Trump said it was his “great honor” to endorse James and predicted that he would become Michigan’s next governor.
James quickly welcomed the endorsement, thanking Trump and describing him as the greatest president of his lifetime.
But the real shock came afterward.
Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt, who had been competing against James in the Republican primary, announced that he was ending his campaign and uniting behind the Trump-backed candidate.
Nesbitt said Republicans must focus on defeating Democrats rather than fighting one another.
According to Nesbitt, a lengthy and divisive primary battle would only benefit the political left.
He urged his supporters to rally behind James and help deliver a Republican victory in November.
The move immediately changed the dynamics of the race.
What had been shaping up as a competitive Republican primary suddenly became a much clearer path for James, who now enters the next phase of the campaign with Trump’s endorsement and the backing of a major former opponent.
James praised Nesbitt’s decision and said it reflected the kind of unity conservatives need heading into a crucial election year.
He argued that Michigan voters are increasingly frustrated with Democratic leadership and are looking for a new direction focused on jobs, public safety, economic growth, and government accountability.
Not everyone in the Republican field was pleased.
Businessman Perry Johnson criticized Trump’s endorsement and argued that Republican voters should consider the party’s past statewide election results before choosing a nominee.
Johnson suggested that Michigan Republicans need a candidate who can break through with independent and swing voters in a general election.
Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox also signaled that he has no plans to leave the race.
Cox highlighted his long record of supporting Trump and noted that he voted for the president in all three of his presidential campaigns. He also pointed to his work defending election integrity efforts in Michigan.
Despite the criticism from other candidates, the biggest headline from Monday was impossible to ignore.
Trump issued an endorsement.
Within hours, a major Republican rival stepped aside.
For supporters, it was yet another reminder that Trump’s political influence remains remarkably strong inside the Republican Party.
As Michigan’s governor’s race moves forward, all eyes will now be on whether Trump’s endorsement can help propel John James to victory and deliver another major win for the America First movement.
