Ocasio-Cortez Building Momentum For 2028
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has emerged as the early leader in a new poll measuring potential Democratic candidates for the 2028 presidential election, signaling the growing influence of the party’s progressive wing.
While the election remains years away, the survey has sparked fresh debate over the future direction of the Democratic Party and whether its voters are moving further to the left following recent election setbacks.
New Hampshire Poll Gives AOC A Narrow Lead
A new University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll found Ocasio-Cortez receiving 22% support among likely Democratic presidential primary voters in the state.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg followed closely with 21%, while Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) finished a distant third with 9%. California Gov. Gavin Newsom received 8%, with the remaining support divided among several lesser-known Democrats.
Although New Hampshire traditionally plays an important role in presidential politics, the poll should be viewed as an early snapshot rather than a prediction of the eventual Democratic nominee. Still, it provides one of the first meaningful looks at where Democratic primary voters currently stand.
Political Analyst Says Progressive Wing Is Driving The Party
Patrick Allocco, founder of the Zoose Political Index, believes the results reflect the increasing influence of progressive activists inside the Democratic Party.
Speaking on Newsmax’s Finnerty, Allocco said the survey shows where the party’s grassroots voters are headed as Democrats search for new national leadership.
According to Allocco, his organization has watched Ocasio-Cortez steadily gain support over the past year. When earlier polling placed her around 10%, he said his team viewed that number as the beginning of her political rise rather than the limit of her appeal.
As additional surveys have been released, her standing among Democratic voters has continued to improve.
Democrats Face A Thin National Bench
Allocco also argued that Democrats currently lack a deep roster of nationally recognized candidates capable of uniting the party.
With several longtime Democratic leaders approaching retirement age and no clear consensus successor emerging, figures like Ocasio-Cortez have received increased attention from activists looking for a new generation of leadership.
The congresswoman has built a national profile through frequent media appearances, a large social media following, and outspoken positions on issues including climate policy, healthcare, and government spending.
Supporters see her as an energetic voice capable of energizing younger voters, while critics argue many of her policy proposals are too progressive to appeal to a broad national electorate.
Questions About Experience Remain
Despite her early polling success, Allocco questioned whether Ocasio-Cortez has the experience necessary to mount a successful presidential campaign.
He pointed to her appearance at the Munich Security Conference, arguing it highlighted areas where she would need to gain additional foreign policy and executive experience before seeking the nation’s highest office.
Political analysts across the ideological spectrum have frequently noted that presidential candidates face intense scrutiny on national security, international affairs, and executive leadership—areas where members of Congress often have more limited experience than governors or former cabinet officials.
Those questions are likely to remain part of any future discussion surrounding a possible White House campaign.
Could A Senate Challenge Come First?
Rather than pursuing the presidency immediately, Allocco believes Ocasio-Cortez may instead focus on New York politics.
He suggested that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer could eventually become her primary political target if she decides to seek statewide office.
A Senate campaign would allow Ocasio-Cortez to build broader electoral experience while further strengthening her influence within the Democratic Party. Some political observers have also suggested that a presidential campaign could increase her national profile regardless of whether she ultimately seeks the White House.
At this stage, however, Ocasio-Cortez has not announced plans to run for president or challenge Schumer for the Senate.
What The Poll Means Going Forward
The University of New Hampshire conducted the Granite State Poll between July 15 and July 20, surveying 1,458 New Hampshire residents. Among the 648 likely Democratic presidential primary voters, the survey carried a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
With more than two years remaining before the 2028 presidential campaign begins in earnest, voter preferences could change significantly as additional candidates enter the race.
Even so, the early survey suggests that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the Democratic Party’s most recognizable figures and may play a major role in shaping its future, whether that path leads to a presidential campaign, a Senate challenge, or another prominent leadership position.
As Democrats continue debating the party’s direction, polls like this one will likely receive increasing attention from both supporters and critics looking for clues about who could lead the party into the next presidential election.
