Kamala Showing No Signs of 2028 Run

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is keeping Democrats guessing about whether she will make another run for the White House in 2028.

Harris has not announced a presidential campaign or taken many of the traditional steps associated with launching one. Instead, she is putting much of her public attention on helping Democratic candidates ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

That has left questions about her political future unanswered as other prominent Democrats begin considering their own plans for the 2028 presidential election.

Harris Remains Focused on the 2026 Midterms

Harris has continued to leave the door open to another presidential campaign, but her current political activity is centered on the midterms.

During a September 10 appearance on Megan Rapinoe’s “Why Are You Like This?” podcast, Harris discussed her political future while emphasizing her commitment to public service and the upcoming elections.

The podcast itself highlighted the question of whether Harris could run for president again in 2028, but her immediate attention remains on helping Democrats compete in congressional and statewide races.

Harris is expected to make campaign appearances in several key states, including Michigan, Nevada and Georgia.

Her political schedule includes events involving Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford during his campaign for governor, and Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff.

No Formal 2028 Campaign Operation Yet

Despite the speculation surrounding Harris, there are still few visible signs of a full presidential campaign operation.

She has not rolled out a major national policy platform or launched the extensive fundraising effort normally associated with a serious White House campaign.

Harris has, however, remained in contact with Democratic activists, candidates and political allies as she considers her next move.

She has also reportedly discussed lessons from the 2024 presidential election, when she became the Democratic nominee but lost the general election.

The lack of a formal campaign structure does not mean Harris has ruled out another run. Instead, it suggests she may be waiting until after the midterm elections before making a final decision.

Gavin Newsom Says He Would Stay Out if Harris Runs

One of the most closely watched potential Democratic candidates has already said Harris’s decision would affect his own.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he would not run for president in 2028 if Harris enters the race.

Newsom said competing directly against Harris would make little political sense because of their overlapping networks and political relationships.

His comments were unusually direct at a time when many possible 2028 candidates are avoiding firm commitments. CNN’s September 15 transcript confirms that Newsom said he would stay out of the race if Harris runs.

Newsom has not formally announced a presidential campaign, but he acknowledged during the interview that he is considering what a future run could involve.

Other Democrats Are Keeping Their Options Open

Not every possible Democratic contender appears prepared to wait for Harris.

California Rep. Ro Khanna has not committed to staying out of a 2028 race if Harris becomes a candidate.

Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego has also indicated that any future presidential decision would involve personal and political considerations of his own.

That could create a crowded Democratic primary regardless of what Harris ultimately decides.

The uncertainty is significant because Harris remains one of the most recognizable figures in the Democratic Party after serving four years as vice president and becoming the party’s presidential nominee in 2024.

Harris Has Not Ruled Out Another Presidential Run

Harris’s political future has remained the subject of speculation since the 2024 election.

Her appearance on Rapinoe’s podcast brought the issue back into focus. The September 10 episode was specifically promoted around Harris discussing public service and whether she might seek the presidency again in 2028.

For now, however, Harris is emphasizing the 2026 elections rather than launching a presidential campaign.

That gives her additional time to assess the political landscape, evaluate Democratic support and determine whether another White House campaign makes sense.

Democrats May Have to Wait Until After the Midterms

Former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile, who has informally advised Harris, has suggested there is no immediate reason for Harris to announce her plans.

That means a major decision could come after the November 3 midterm elections.

Until then, Harris appears likely to remain active on the campaign trail while avoiding a formal commitment about 2028.

Her eventual decision could have a significant effect on the Democratic presidential field, particularly because Newsom has already said his own plans depend on whether she runs.

For the moment, Democrats considering the 2028 race are left with the same unanswered question: Will Kamala Harris seek the presidency again?
