Trump’s SAVE Act Gets More Support

A new national poll suggests that a strong majority of Americans support requiring U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections, reinforcing arguments from supporters of the SAVE America Act that election integrity remains a top concern for voters across the political spectrum.

The survey found widespread backing for several key election security measures, including proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo identification requirements at the polls. The findings come as President Donald Trump continues urging the Senate to pass the legislation before lawmakers leave Washington.

Poll Shows Broad Support for Citizen-Only Voting

According to the survey conducted by McLaughlin & Associates on behalf of Tea Party Patriots Action, 82% of voters believe only American citizens should be allowed to vote in elections for president, the U.S. Senate, and the House of Representatives.

The poll surveyed 1,000 likely general election voters between July 15 and July 21 and found support extending well beyond Republican voters.

Among those surveyed:

• 91% of Republicans agreed only U.S. citizens should vote in federal elections.
• 84% of independents shared the same view.
• 72% of Democrats also supported limiting federal voting to American citizens.

The results suggest that concerns about election security continue to resonate with many voters regardless of political affiliation.

SAVE America Act Would Add New Election Safeguards

The SAVE America Act has already passed the House of Representatives but remains stalled in the Senate.

If enacted, the legislation would establish several new requirements designed to strengthen election security, including:

• Requiring proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote.
• Requiring voters to present a valid government-issued photo ID before casting a ballot.
• Tightening rules governing mail-in voting.
• Directing states to remove noncitizens from official voter registration rolls.

Supporters argue these measures would help protect the integrity of federal elections while increasing public confidence in the voting process.

Americans Also Back Proof of Citizenship and Voter ID

The survey found equally strong support for the bill’s additional provisions.

Nearly 78% of respondents said individuals should be required to provide proof of citizenship before registering to vote.

Support for that requirement included:

• 94% of Republicans
• 73% of independents
• 68% of Democrats

The same percentage—78%—also supported requiring voters to show a photo ID before receiving a ballot.

Support for voter ID requirements included:

• 94% of Republicans
• 75% of independents
• 63% of Democrats

The findings indicate that voter identification laws continue to receive broad public approval across party lines.

Most Americans Already Have a Valid Photo ID

One of the survey’s most notable findings involved voter identification.

According to the poll, 95% of respondents said they already possess a valid photo ID, including a driver’s license, state-issued identification card, or U.S. passport.

Additionally, 66% of voters described photo ID requirements as a reasonable expectation that most Americans can easily meet.

Supporters of voter ID laws have long argued that such requirements are common-sense safeguards similar to those used for banking, travel, and many everyday transactions.

Trump Presses Senate to Pass the Bill

President Donald Trump has repeatedly called on Senate lawmakers to remain in Washington until the SAVE America Act reaches his desk.

The president has made election integrity one of his major domestic priorities and has urged senators to postpone their scheduled recess until the legislation receives a vote.

However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune has acknowledged that the proposal currently lacks enough bipartisan support to overcome the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold. He has also indicated there are not enough Republican votes to eliminate the filibuster, despite calls from Trump and some conservatives to do so.

Majority Wants Senate to Keep Working

The poll also found that 56% of voters believe the Senate should continue working to pass the SAVE America Act before the next midterm elections.

Even among Democrats, 38% said lawmakers should continue pursuing the legislation instead of delaying action.

Tea Party Patriots Action Chair Jenny Beth Martin said the results demonstrate that Americans overwhelmingly support stronger election safeguards.

She argued that requiring proof of citizenship during voter registration and presenting a photo ID at the polls are practical measures that enjoy broad public support and help strengthen confidence in the nation’s election system.

As debate over election laws continues in Washington, the latest polling suggests that many Americans favor additional safeguards aimed at protecting federal elections.

While the SAVE America Act still faces significant obstacles in the Senate, the survey indicates that proposals such as proof of citizenship for voter registration and voter ID requirements remain among the most widely supported election security measures discussed in Congress.
