Will Trump Be Remembered As One of America's Greatest Presidents?

Republicans Still Trying To Maintain Southern Border

Republicans are continuing their efforts to strengthen security along the southern border, arguing that maintaining the progress made under President Donald Trump will require continued enforcement, federal resources, and cooperation with local authorities.

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, border security remains a major issue for Republican candidates, particularly in Texas, where communities have experienced the direct effects of changing immigration policies for years.

Republican congressional candidate Eric Flores, who is challenging Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez in Texas’ 34th Congressional District, has made border security a central part of his campaign.

Flores, a former federal prosecutor and Army National Guard captain, has emphasized his experience with the challenges facing South Texas residents. He has argued that border security is more than a political debate for families and communities living near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Trump administration has continued expanding border enforcement efforts, including additional physical barriers, surveillance technology, and coordination between federal agencies.

Recent reporting from the Associated Press indicates that illegal crossings have declined significantly following stricter immigration policies. However, federal officials have continued deploying personnel and resources to areas along the Rio Grande to discourage illegal activity and combat trafficking operations.

Republican lawmakers maintain that the reduction in crossings should not lead Washington to weaken its commitment to border enforcement.

They argue that maintaining a secure border requires consistent policies rather than temporary measures that could be reversed when political leadership changes.

In Texas, the debate also involves the role of local communities, law enforcement officers, and property owners whose daily lives can be affected by border activity.

Supporters of stronger enforcement say protecting these communities, preventing criminal trafficking, and ensuring that immigration laws are followed should remain federal priorities.

Critics of the administration’s approach, however, have questioned the costs of expanded military involvement and border infrastructure, particularly as illegal crossings have already fallen.

The political consequences could be significant.

South Texas has become an increasingly competitive region after President Trump made substantial electoral gains there in 2024. Republicans are now working to translate those gains into congressional victories during the November elections.

For Flores and other Republican candidates, the challenge is persuading voters that continued border enforcement is necessary while also addressing concerns about inflation, employment, and household expenses.

House Speaker Mike Johnson recently traveled to South Texas to support Republican congressional candidates, underscoring the region’s importance in determining which party controls the House of Representatives.

As Election Day approaches, Republicans are expected to continue highlighting immigration enforcement as a central part of their national agenda.

The larger question is whether Washington can maintain lower levels of illegal border crossings while addressing the economic and public safety concerns of border communities.

For Republicans, preserving tighter border security remains a priority, even as voters prepare to decide the future direction of Congress.
