Top Republican Urges Trump To Stay On Course
President Donald Trump supports maintaining strong military and economic pressure on Iran, according to Sen. John Kennedy, who said the president believes sustained action is necessary to weaken Tehran’s ability to threaten the United States, Israel, and other allies in the Middle East.
During an appearance on CBS News’ Face the Nation on Sunday, the Louisiana Republican said the brief pause in recent U.S. military strikes should not be viewed as a major policy shift. Instead, Kennedy argued that America should continue applying pressure through targeted military operations, tougher sanctions, and a continued blockade designed to limit Iran’s resources.
Kennedy Calls for Stronger Sanctions and Continued Military Action
Kennedy urged the Trump administration to tighten sanctions on Iran’s oil exports, arguing that restricting the regime’s largest source of revenue would further weaken its military capabilities and reduce its ability to fund regional proxy groups.
The senator also supported continuing the naval blockade and carrying out additional strikes against strategic military targets, including the heavily fortified Pickaxe Mountain facility, which has drawn attention because of what intelligence analysts believe may be located beneath the site.
According to Kennedy, President Trump remains committed to maintaining military pressure on Iran through targeted operations when necessary. He said the president believes demonstrating American strength is often the most effective way to deter future aggression.
Kennedy also quoted Trump as saying that, in some situations, decisive action is required to discourage hostile regimes from escalating conflict.
Sharp Criticism of Iran’s Leadership
During the interview, Kennedy sharply criticized Iran’s ruling leadership, arguing that the regime has repeatedly demonstrated behavior that makes it an unpredictable national security threat.
He compared Iran’s leaders to infamous criminals and cult figures, saying they cannot be trusted to act as rational decision-makers in matters involving war, terrorism, or nuclear ambitions.
Energy Costs Remain a Concern
Kennedy acknowledged that continued military operations and sanctions could contribute to higher energy prices in the short term. However, he argued that protecting America’s long-term national security interests should remain the top priority.
He warned that easing pressure too soon could allow Iran to rebuild its military capabilities, expand its influence across the Middle East, and continue threatening U.S. allies and global shipping routes.
Kennedy said maintaining the current strategy for at least several more months would give the United States a better opportunity to achieve its strategic objectives.
No Support for Ground Troops
Despite advocating continued military operations, Kennedy made clear he is not calling for a large-scale U.S. ground invasion of Iran.
Instead, he said America should continue relying on precision airstrikes, economic sanctions, intelligence operations, and naval enforcement while avoiding the deployment of American combat troops.
