Trump’s GOP Has New ‘Modified’ Version Of DHS Bill
House Speaker Mike Johnson delivered a clear warning Monday, saying a Senate-backed Department of Homeland Security funding bill contains serious flaws and must be rewritten before House Republicans will support it.
The battle comes as the DHS shutdown drags past two months, raising new concerns about border security, immigration enforcement, and the future of critical federal agencies.
Johnson said the Senate proposal was rushed, poorly written, and failed to properly protect two of the most important agencies in the nation’s immigration system — ICE and Border Patrol.
Johnson Pushes Stronger House Plan
Speaking to reporters at the Capitol, Johnson revealed House Republicans now have a revised version of the bill designed to fix those mistakes while preserving most of the original funding structure.
He made clear that securing America’s border remains the top priority.
Johnson said Republicans must ensure immigration laws are enforced and that the southern border is safe, secure, and fully staffed.
He also criticized Democrats for refusing to support stronger enforcement measures, saying Republicans may need to act alone once again.
DHS Shutdown Reaches Dangerous Stage
The standoff is becoming more urgent by the day.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin recently warned that funding for DHS employees could run dry by the first week of May if Congress fails to act.
That would put added pressure on agencies already dealing with border chaos, illegal crossings, and national security threats.
For many Americans, especially older voters concerned about safety and stability, the shutdown is becoming a major test of Washington leadership.
Senate Republicans Defend Original Bill
Senate Majority Leader John Thune defended the Senate package, saying lawmakers already funded other DHS agencies and created a path to support ICE and Border Patrol separately.
Still, Johnson’s resistance means any House changes would force the bill back to the Senate, potentially delaying final passage.
Trump Steps In With Urgent Message
Donald Trump weighed in Monday, calling on House Republicans to unite behind the budget blueprint needed to move the larger border security package forward.
In a Truth Social post, Trump urged lawmakers to stay focused and move quickly so the final bill reaches his desk by June 1.
The president’s message underscored what many conservatives believe: America cannot afford more delays when it comes to immigration enforcement and national security.
Why This Fight Matters
This is about more than a spending bill.
It is about whether Washington will fully fund the agencies tasked with protecting the border, enforcing immigration law, and defending the homeland.
With the shutdown deepening and deadlines closing in, House Republicans now face a critical moment — stand firm, strengthen the bill, and deliver the border security Americans have demanded for years.
