New Group Calls For Economic Boycott
A grassroots movement is urging Americans to take a stand by refraining from spending money this Friday, in what is being called a “blackout” protest aimed at challenging the current economic and political environment.
The protest, led by the group People’s Union USA, comes at a time when many are struggling with rising housing costs, persistent inflation, and skyrocketing prices on everyday essentials like groceries. The group, which stresses that it is nonpartisan, is calling on Americans to avoid making purchases from major businesses and to refrain from using credit or debit cards for a full 24 hours.
“As our first act of defiance, we choose to shut down the system for one day,” says a statement on the group’s website. “For 24 hours, we show them who truly holds the power.”
The goal, according to People’s Union USA, is to unite everyday Americans in opposition to what they believe is corporate greed that is driving up living costs.
“For years, we’ve been told there’s no other option,” said John Schwarz, the founder of People’s Union USA, in a video shared on Instagram. “We’ve been told to accept sky-high prices, unchecked corporate greed, and tax breaks for billionaires, all while struggling to make ends meet. The elites have conditioned us to believe we have no power. It’s time to prove them wrong.”
The economic strain Americans are facing continues to grow. Inflation showed no signs of slowing in January, with rising prices for essentials like food, gas, and rent. The latest Consumer Price Index from the Labor Department revealed that inflation had risen by 3 percent from January of last year, marking a sharp increase from the 2.9 percent rise from the previous month.
A recent poll from Navigator Research found that 60 percent of Americans believe corporate greed is a major factor contributing to the surge in costs. For many, this protest is a rallying cry to demand accountability from both big business and the politicians who enable them.
