Top Democrat Thanks Trump
Washington, D.C. – President Donald J. Trump confirmed Friday that his White House meeting with embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams was brief and mostly symbolic, suggesting the Democrat mayor came to offer his gratitude.
“He came in to say hello,” President Trump told reporters. “It was very nice. And I think he came in to thank me, frankly.”
While President Trump didn’t elaborate on what Adams was thanking him for, the visit came at a politically charged moment—just hours before the Department of Justice (DOJ) released hundreds of pages tied to the federal corruption investigation that recently collapsed against the mayor.
Adams Thanks Trump Amid Scrutiny and Scandal
A spokesperson for Mayor Adams’s campaign claimed Adams was grateful for Trump’s public defense when federal investigators were, in Adams’s words, “unfairly and selectively targeting” him.
In a video posted to X (formerly Twitter), Adams stated the meeting focused on revitalizing American manufacturing and improving coordination between New York City and the White House.
“New York City is vital to America,” Adams said. “We need real communication with Washington to deliver for our people.”
But critics argue the mayor’s visit was more about political damage control than city business.
White House Confirms Adams Requested the Meeting
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Mayor Adams personally requested the meeting, and President Trump agreed. No specific agenda was disclosed at the time, though Adams had previewed the meeting online as being “New York-centered.”
It marked the first meeting between the two leaders since Adams traveled to Florida to speak with Trump prior to his presidential inauguration.
Notably, the meeting happened just before a court-imposed deadline requiring the DOJ to release documents related to the now-dismissed criminal case against Adams.
Collapsing Case Sparks DOJ Shake-Up
The DOJ’s case against Eric Adams included serious allegations of bribery, illegal campaign donations, and connections to foreign business interests, including at least one Turkish official. The misconduct allegedly began in 2014 and stretched into his 2021 campaign and mayoral term.
While Adams pleaded not guilty, the legal battle caused internal chaos at the Southern District of New York’s U.S. Attorney’s Office. Several federal prosecutors—including the acting U.S. Attorney—resigned rather than support a motion to drop charges.
The DOJ ultimately dismissed the case, citing interference with President Trump’s immigration agenda, which Adams had started cooperating with.
A Political About-Face?
For many Americans—especially conservatives—Adams’s sudden outreach to President Trump raises eyebrows. After years of hostility toward Trump’s leadership, the Democrat mayor now appears to recognize that Trump’s policies are exactly what cities like New York desperately need.
With skyrocketing crime, a migrant crisis spiraling out of control, and crumbling public services, New York City is at a tipping point. Even Democrat leaders are starting to acknowledge the results-oriented leadership of President Trump.
