Bass Tries To Downplay GOP Opponents Complaint

A heated political battle is unfolding in Los Angeles as Karen Bass pushes back against accusations from former reality television personality Spencer Pratt, who claims her campaign may have crossed legal lines during a recent election-related video shoot.

The public feud escalated Tuesday after Pratt filed a complaint alleging Bass violated California election laws by filming campaign-related content near a ballot drop box.

Pratt argued that the mayor’s campaign video showed supporters delivering ballots while Bass interacted with voters nearby — something he says raises serious concerns about election integrity and proper conduct around voting locations.

“Electioneering within 100 feet of a ballot box is against the law,” Pratt wrote on social media, adding that public officials should be held accountable when it comes to protecting confidence in the election process.

California law prohibits several forms of campaign activity within 100 feet of polling places and ballot drop boxes, including displaying campaign signs, candidate names, or promotional materials intended to influence voters.

Bass, however, strongly rejected the accusations and mocked Pratt’s campaign in a sharp online response. The mayor criticized Pratt’s use of artificial intelligence-generated campaign videos and joked that her supporters are “real Angelenos,” unlike what she described as Pratt’s “AI cartoons.”

According to Bass’s campaign team, the video in question was filmed at two separate locations: a public park and a ballot drop-off area located more than 200 feet apart. Campaign officials insist no signs or election materials were displayed near the ballot box itself and say the campaign followed all applicable rules.

The political clash comes as tensions continue rising ahead of Los Angeles’s next mayoral election, where concerns over crime, homelessness, public safety, and leadership remain top issues for voters.

Pratt, best known for his role on MTV’s “The Hills,” has increasingly positioned himself as a vocal critic of Bass and progressive leadership in California. In recent weeks, he has repeatedly blamed Bass for what he views as declining conditions in Los Angeles, including crime concerns and ongoing homelessness problems.

The criticism intensified after devastating wildfires tore through parts of Southern California in early 2025, including the massive Palisades fire that destroyed homes across the region. Pratt’s own Pacific Palisades home was among the properties lost in the disaster.

Bass also faced backlash after it was revealed she was overseas in Ghana during the early stages of the wildfire emergency. Critics questioned whether city leadership responded quickly enough as residents scrambled to evacuate dangerous areas.

Although Bass’s administration has highlighted achievements such as expanding affordable housing projects and reducing homelessness numbers, many residents remain frustrated by visible street homelessness, rising living costs, and ongoing public safety concerns throughout Los Angeles.

Pratt recently argued during a television interview that many homeless individuals remain on the streets because of addiction issues and resistance to treatment or law enforcement. He proposed building a large treatment center on federal land to address the crisis more aggressively, though he offered few specifics about how the plan would work.

He also generated controversy after suggesting homeless individuals could be relocated to Seattle, referencing Katie Wilson and the city’s progressive policies.

As the political showdown grows more intense, the battle between Bass and Pratt is becoming about far more than campaign videos. For many voters, the debate reflects larger frustrations over crime, homelessness, government accountability, and the future direction of Los Angeles under progressive leadership.

With election season heating up, this California political fight is likely just getting started.
