Trump Calls For Unity

President Donald Trump urged House Republicans and Democrats on Monday to act quickly to reopen the federal government, calling for an immediate vote on the Senate-approved funding bill without changes.

Trump said reopening the government must come first, warning lawmakers that delays would only hurt the country and serve no political purpose.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said he is working closely with House Speaker Mike Johnson to move the legislation through the House and send it to his desk for signature.

The president made clear that the Senate-passed funding package should advance exactly as written. Trump emphasized that negotiations over unresolved issues can take place later, but insisted the government must be reopened without delay.

The push comes as a partial government shutdown continues to impact major federal agencies, including the Pentagon, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Homeland Security. The shutdown has raised concerns about national security, public health, and federal operations.

Despite the disruption, congressional leaders believe the shutdown will be brief. On Friday, the Senate voted by a large bipartisan margin to reopen agencies covered under five regular appropriations bills. The legislation also includes a short-term, two-week funding extension for DHS.

Trump said lawmakers should reopen the government now and continue budget talks afterward, warning against another extended shutdown that could damage the economy and public confidence.

House Speaker Johnson echoed that message during a Sunday interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, saying he expects Congress to resolve the shutdown by Tuesday.

Johnson acknowledged logistical challenges in bringing lawmakers back to Washington and suggested Republicans may need to move forward largely on their own following talks with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

For now, both the White House and House leadership are signaling urgency, with Trump stressing that reopening the government is the immediate priority.
