Trump Blamed For 20k Job Cuts?

Massive restructuring under way as UPS adjusts to tariffs, economic slowdown, and shifting trade policies

United Parcel Service (UPS), one of America’s largest shipping companies, announced Tuesday it will cut 20,000 jobs in 2025 as part of a sweeping cost-saving plan. The move comes as companies across the country brace for continued economic uncertainty and adapt to President Donald Trump’s bold trade and tariff agenda.

Major Facility Closures and Workforce Reductions

UPS also confirmed it will close 73 buildings—both leased and owned—by mid-year, with more potential closures on the horizon. Company officials say this is part of an aggressive strategy to streamline logistics operations and lower operating costs.

“As we review our network, additional facilities may be identified for closure,” a UPS statement noted, reflecting the company’s urgent push toward efficiency and consolidation.

Trump’s Tariffs Reshape Shipping Industry

This major announcement follows the rollout of Trump’s strengthened tariff policies, which are expected to reduce international shipping volume. But many experts say that’s the point—bringing jobs and manufacturing back to American soil and holding foreign competitors accountable.

Rather than fight the trend, UPS is leaning in, reworking its global infrastructure and trimming unnecessary overhead.

CEO: UPS Will Emerge Stronger

UPS CEO Carol Tomé praised the company’s workers for their continued dedication during these “challenging and dynamic times.”

“As a trusted leader in global logistics, we are using our integrated network and trade experience to help customers adapt to the new trade environment,” she said.

Tomé emphasized that while the macroeconomic landscape is uncertain, UPS’s proactive steps will make the company more resilient, nimble, and competitive going forward.

“These actions couldn’t come at a more important time. We’re making changes now that will position UPS for long-term success.”

What This Means for American Workers and Retirees

For working Americans, retirees, and small business owners—especially those over 50—this is a crucial development. Job security, supply chain reliability, and cost-of-living concerns are top of mind for millions, and UPS’s moves reflect the larger shift toward America First economic priorities.

With the Biden-era economic policies fading and Trump’s vision regaining ground, many corporations are finally responding to the call to tighten operations, prioritize domestic strength, and reduce foreign dependency.
