GOP Lawmaker Bashes Trump’s Tariffs
Former Representative Ken Buck (R-Colo.) recently voiced his confusion over President Trump’s confrontational stance toward Canada, particularly regarding the tariff dispute and the remarks about the U.S. making Canada the “51st state.” Buck, known for his independent views within the GOP before stepping down from Congress last year, expressed concerns that these actions could undermine Trump’s broader political agenda.
On a recent appearance on CNN’s Erin Burnett OutFront, Buck argued that the president’s approach could backfire, especially with upcoming elections in Canada. He noted that Trump’s tariffs and nationalist rhetoric could influence Canadian voters, making it more difficult for the U.S. to maintain positive relationships with its northern neighbor.
While Buck disagrees with the way Trump has handled Canada, he is more supportive of the president’s tough stance on China, calling the nation a “Pacific Rim adversary.” However, he stressed that any efforts to confront China should be coordinated with U.S. allies rather than alienating them.
Buck also acknowledged the challenges of working with the current administration’s unpredictable policy shifts. He pointed out that Trump’s policy approach often appears to be a mix of bold declarations and unexpected retreats, referencing the ongoing situation in Ukraine and Trump’s past threats to cut off aid to the country. Buck made it clear that isolationist rhetoric, like the “America First” mantra, does not work in international trade and diplomatic relations.
According to Buck, engaging allies is crucial, especially when dealing with global threats like China. He emphasized the need for unity in confronting international challenges, whether through trade agreements, military aid, or diplomatic efforts. In his view, isolationism simply isn’t a viable strategy for America’s future in the global arena.
