NYC Mayoral Race Closer Than Expected
New York City’s mayoral race is suddenly turning into one of the biggest political shockers of the year — and it could spell disaster for the Democratic Party.
According to political strategist Dick Morris, longtime adviser to President Donald Trump, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is surging in the polls and could defy all expectations by overtaking Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, who was once considered unbeatable.
“Mamdani might still squeak by,” Morris told Newsmax’s The Count on Saturday, “but I think Sliwa could finish second — or even first. This race is going to be much tighter than the media is admitting.”
🔴 Republican Momentum Rising — Democrats Flatlining
Morris pointed to fresh polling showing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s comeback campaign collapsing, while Sliwa’s grassroots support is surging across the city’s boroughs.
“The entire Democrat establishment is lining up behind Mamdani,” Morris said, “but voters are rejecting the far-left agenda. They want safety, stability, and common sense again.”
For months, insiders claimed the race was locked up for Mamdani, with Cuomo as the only viable challenger. “But Cuomo’s numbers are dead flat,” Morris noted. “The one actually gaining ground is Sliwa — and that’s a huge story. The political elite can’t imagine a Republican winning in New York City, but it’s happening.”
⚖️ Mamdani’s Radical Policies Trigger Backlash
Morris also warned that Mamdani’s far-left platform is deeply out of touch with everyday New Yorkers.
“He literally wants to close the prisons,” Morris said. “When criminals are arrested, he wants them released immediately — no bail, no accountability. It’s insanity.”
He added, “Democrats always move further left when they lose elections. Mamdani’s ideas aren’t mainstream — they’re dangerous.”
📉 Polls and Betting Markets Miss the Real Story
Even with betting markets giving Mamdani a 92% chance of victory, Morris cautioned that those numbers “ignore the volatility” of this race.
“I wouldn’t take those odds,” he said. “This election is wide open and will come down to the final hours.”
Despite months of expensive Democrat ads, neither Mamdani nor Cuomo has gained a single point, Morris noted. “Meanwhile, Sliwa has doubled his support. That tells you everything.”
💥 Crime, Drugs, and Exodus Fears
Morris slammed Mamdani’s support for drug decriminalization and lenient pretrial releases, calling them “reckless policies that will destroy the city.”
“The ads calling him soft on crime are absolutely accurate,” he said. “If Mamdani wins, New York City will face another mass exodus.”
A recent poll found that 26% of New Yorkers would consider leaving if Mamdani becomes mayor — taking billions in tax dollars with them.
“People are tired of chaos, crime, and corruption,” Morris warned. “They want safety and leadership — and Curtis Sliwa is giving them hope.”
