Walz To Investigate Noem?
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz says his dispute with former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem may not be over yet, even after President Donald Trump announced a major leadership change at DHS this week.
Walz indicated that he intends to keep pressing for answers about a controversial federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis earlier this year. The incident has become a flashpoint in the ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement, federal authority, and border security under the Trump administration.
Fatal Minneapolis Operation Sparks Investigation Demands
The controversy stems from a January immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis that ended in tragedy when two Americans were fatally shot during a federal action.
The individuals were identified as Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
Minnesota officials have argued that state investigators were not given full access to the federal probe that followed the incident. That concern has fueled calls from Walz and other state leaders for greater transparency.
Speaking Thursday during an interview with MSNBC host Jen Psaki, Walz said the issue is about accountability.
“We’re not looking for revenge,” Walz said. “We’re looking for justice and making sure no one is above the law.”
The governor also hinted that legal scrutiny involving Noem may not be finished.
“Former Secretary Noem might want to get used to spending time in Minnesota,” Walz added, suggesting future investigations could continue in the state.
Trump Nominates Senator Markwayne Mullin To Lead DHS
President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he intends to nominate Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma to serve as the next Secretary of Homeland Security.
Trump praised Mullin’s leadership and said he expects the Oklahoma senator to take a strong approach to border security and immigration enforcement.
In a message posted on Truth Social, the president said Mullin would focus on securing the southern border, stopping migrant crime, and combating the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.
Trump added that Mullin would be a “spectacular Secretary of Homeland Security” and said he hopes the Senate will move quickly so the new DHS leader can take office before the end of the month.
Walz Urges Senate To Delay DHS Confirmation
Despite the nomination, Walz is urging senators to slow down the confirmation process.
The Minnesota governor says lawmakers should wait until state officials are allowed to participate fully in the federal investigation into the Minneapolis shootings.
According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, state investigators were excluded from joint investigative efforts conducted alongside the FBI.
Walz said senators should apply pressure until Minnesota authorities are given access.
“My message to senators is simple,” Walz said. “Don’t vote on anything until Minnesota investigators are allowed to take part in the investigation of these killings.”
Democratic Governors Join Criticism Of DHS Leadership
Walz is not alone in criticizing the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement actions.
Several Democratic governors spoke out following Noem’s departure from the Department of Homeland Security.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said that removing Noem from the role does not resolve the larger controversy surrounding the federal operations.
Posting on social media platform X, Newsom said additional officials should still be held accountable.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker also criticized Noem’s tenure leading the department.
In video remarks shared online, Pritzker accused DHS leadership of creating turmoil during enforcement actions and argued that investigations should continue even after her departure.
Immigration Enforcement Remains Major National Debate
The situation highlights the broader political divide over immigration enforcement and federal authority.
President Trump has made border security and aggressive immigration enforcement central priorities of his administration, arguing that stronger policies are necessary to protect American communities and stop illegal immigration.
At the same time, some Democratic leaders say states should have more oversight when federal enforcement actions take place within their borders.
As the Senate prepares to consider Markwayne Mullin’s nomination for DHS secretary, the political fight over immigration policy appears far from settled.
