Denmark Attacks Trump

Denmark’s government is reacting strongly after Donald Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the new U.S. special envoy to Greenland.

Danish officials signaled immediate opposition, describing the move as unacceptable and calling for direct diplomatic talks with Washington.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said in a public statement that Denmark strongly objects to both the appointment and the stated purpose behind it. He confirmed that Denmark is formally summoning the U.S. ambassador for discussions, underscoring rising tension between the two longtime allies.

Trump Administration Reasserts Greenland’s Strategic Value

President Trump announced Landry’s appointment over the weekend, renewing international attention on Greenland’s strategic importance. Greenland remains an autonomous territory under Denmark, but Trump has long argued that the Arctic region is critical to U.S. and NATO security.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Landry’s understanding of global security concerns, stating that Greenland plays a vital role in protecting American interests and strengthening allied defense.

Trump emphasized that the territory is essential for national security, early-warning systems, and maintaining stability in the Arctic as global competition in the region continues to increase.

Jeff Landry Backs Trump’s Greenland Position

Governor Landry, who will remain in office through January 2028, has publicly supported Trump’s position on Greenland. Prior to Trump’s second inauguration earlier this year, Landry openly endorsed the idea of Greenland aligning more closely with the United States.

In a statement posted on X, Landry said Trump was “absolutely right,” adding that stronger ties between Greenland and the U.S. would be beneficial for both sides.

President Trump first raised the idea of acquiring Greenland during his first term and revisited the issue during the 2024 campaign. Since returning to the White House, he has repeatedly pointed to Greenland’s role in missile defense, Arctic shipping lanes, and countering foreign influence near U.S. borders.

Diplomatic Tensions Continue

The decision to appoint a special envoy signals that the Trump administration is taking a more structured and strategic approach to Greenland. Denmark’s response, however, suggests that officials in Copenhagen are unwilling to accept the renewed focus without challenge.

As talks between U.S. and Danish officials move forward, Greenland’s future role in Arctic security and global geopolitics is once again at the center of international debate.
