Trump Releases Urgent Warning
President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Democrat governors and mayors across the country to work more closely with federal immigration authorities, warning that a lack of cooperation has contributed to unsafe conditions in several major cities.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said ongoing resistance from some state and local governments has complicated immigration enforcement efforts and raised concerns about public safety nationwide.
Four Actions Trump Says States and Cities Must Take
Trump outlined four specific steps he said Democrat-led jurisdictions should take to support federal immigration enforcement and reduce crime.
First, he called on state and local officials to transfer criminal illegal migrants currently held in prisons or jails — including those with outstanding warrants or documented criminal histories — into federal custody for removal proceedings.
Second, Trump said illegal migrants arrested by local law enforcement should be promptly turned over to federal immigration authorities.
Third, he urged local police departments to cooperate with federal officials in locating and detaining illegal migrants who are wanted in connection with criminal activity.
Fourth, Trump encouraged Democrat-led cities and states to formally partner with the federal government to speed up the removal of criminal illegal migrants. He cited cities such as Memphis and Washington, D.C., as examples of jurisdictions that have cooperated and reported improved public safety outcomes.
Minnesota Officials Called Out by Name
Trump singled out Tim Walz and Jacob Frey, claiming they have declined to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and have pushed policies that limit cooperation with federal authorities in Minnesota.
According to Trump, such policies make it more difficult for federal authorities to remove criminal offenders and place additional strain on local communities.
Republican States Cited as Examples
The president contrasted those policies with Republican-led states, arguing that cooperation between local and federal law enforcement has led to more orderly immigration enforcement.
Trump pointed to Texas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Louisiana, saying those states have coordinated closely with federal authorities and avoided major disruptions.
He said federal officials arrested more than 150,000 criminal illegal migrants in those states over the past year, noting that the enforcement actions occurred without widespread unrest or large-scale protests.
Criticism of Sanctuary Policies
Trump also criticized sanctuary city and sanctuary state policies, arguing that they limit cooperation with federal authorities and make immigration enforcement more difficult.
He said prioritizing cooperation with federal law enforcement helps protect law-abiding residents and reduces risks for police officers working on the front lines.
The president renewed his call for Congress to pass legislation addressing sanctuary policies nationwide, saying clearer federal standards are needed to ensure consistency across states and cities.
Immigration Remains a Central Political Issue
Immigration enforcement continues to be one of the most debated issues in national politics, with Republican and Democrat leaders divided over the role of local governments, public safety concerns, and cooperation with federal authorities.
Trump has repeatedly emphasized that his administration views coordination between federal, state, and local officials as essential to maintaining border security and protecting American communities.
