Trump Announces New Deal
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced a powerful new agreement with Finnish President Alexander Stubb this week that will greatly expand America’s Arctic capabilities — and create new jobs at home.
Under the landmark deal, the United States will add 11 new icebreaker ships to its fleet, securing a stronger presence in the Arctic where both Russia and China have been aggressively expanding their reach.
“We’ve got a big order coming up,” President Trump said from the Oval Office. “We’re buying icebreakers—building them together. Four will be made in Finland and seven right here in the United States. We negotiated a tough price, and we need these ships because America has more territory than anyone. This is a great deal for our country.”
Made in America — With Strong Allies
As part of the agreement, Finland will build four of the vessels, while seven will be proudly constructed in U.S. shipyards, including Galveston, Texas, and Houma, Louisiana. The project—valued at $6.1 billion—is expected to bring a major boost to the American manufacturing industry and thousands of good-paying jobs.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb confirmed that the first icebreaker will be delivered by 2028, describing the partnership as a “powerful alliance between two nations that share the same values and respect.”
Standing Strong Against Russia and China
Officials say the new icebreakers will give the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard the upper hand in Arctic operations, an increasingly strategic region where Russian and Chinese activity has grown in recent years.
Also in attendance was Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, who called the deal “a major victory for Finland’s economy,” especially as the nation continues to face pressure from Moscow over its support for Ukraine.
“This deal is extremely important to Finland and our economy,” Orpo said. “Our shipyards are working hard, and this partnership with President Trump’s administration brings jobs, growth, and stability.”
Trump Delivers Again
The icebreaker deal adds to President Trump’s growing list of major trade and defense victories, reinforcing his commitment to putting America first while strengthening global alliances.
By 2028, the U.S. will have one of the most advanced Arctic fleets in the world, ensuring that American workers, not Beijing or Moscow, lead the way in innovation and defense.
