White House Official Trashes Trump’s Plan
Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump is once again putting America’s safety first, floating a bold proposal to reopen the legendary Alcatraz prison as part of his renewed crackdown on violent crime, repeat offenders, and the chaos spreading in Democrat-run cities.
A senior White House official acknowledged Friday that the proposed $2 billion renovation plan for the historic island prison “sounds excessive,” but emphasized the decision ultimately lies with the President.
“This is still in the early stages,” the official told NewsNation. “We need more detailed assessments. But the goal is clear—restore law and order and protect American families.”
Back to Basics: Holding Dangerous Criminals Accountable
Alcatraz, located in San Francisco Bay, once housed America’s most dangerous criminals—until it was shut down in 1963 due to high maintenance costs. Now, under President Trump’s leadership, the administration is exploring three options:
- A $2 billion full reconstruction
- A $1 billion partial rebuild
- Or opening bids to private contractors to reduce taxpayer burden
Similar public-private partnerships have already been used to secure Delaney Hall in New Jersey and the Alligator Alcatraz Detention Center in Florida, both serving federal immigration and detention needs.

President Trump first unveiled the idea in May on Truth Social, writing:
“REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ! For too long, vicious repeat offenders have brought misery to our nation. In a serious country, we lock up the worst and protect the innocent. That’s the way it should be—and that’s the way it’s going to be under my leadership.”

Bondi and Burgum: “Law and Order Is Back”
Attorney General Pam Bondi and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum toured the site Thursday, signaling strong support from the administration.
“In President Trump’s America, law and order will be fully enforced,” Burgum wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Our visit to Alcatraz shows we are serious about holding dangerous criminals accountable and keeping our communities safe.”
Bondi echoed the message, saying the initiative reflects “real leadership in a time of national lawlessness.”
Pelosi Melts Down Over Trump’s Alcatraz Plan
Not surprisingly, Democrat elites are furious. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) attacked the proposal, calling it “the stupidest initiative yet.”
She accused the Trump administration of being inspired by old Hollywood prison movies and claimed the plan was fiscally irresponsible, saying:
“They can’t afford to convert and maintain Alcatraz while adding trillions in debt with their sinful law,” referring to Trump’s recently signed legislation.
