GOP Doubles Down On Texas Redistricting
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon told Newsmax that Texas’ push to redraw congressional maps is a critical step toward restoring election fairness—and breaking the Democrats’ grip on power through politically engineered districts.
Speaking on The Chris Salcedo Show Monday, Dhillon revealed that the initiative came after her office reviewed a federal court ruling targeting several “minority districts” in Texas that may have been drawn to secure Democrat victories.
“We sent a letter to Texas noting that at least four districts were out of compliance,” Dhillon said. “Combine that with Texas’ own admission that the last census undercounted its population, and you have a strong case for redistricting to reflect the will of the people.”
Democrats Flee Texas to Block Vote
Republican lawmakers in Texas have moved forward with a plan to redraw five congressional districts, aiming to correct what they see as years of partisan gerrymandering favoring Democrats. But instead of debating the plan, Democrat legislators fled the state to block a quorum—grinding the process to a halt.
Their coordinated walkout has led to threats of removal from office, heavy daily fines, and even the suspension of their direct deposit paychecks. Still, they continue to boycott the special legislative session, drawing outrage from voters who see the move as election obstruction.
Race-Based Gerrymandering in the Crosshairs
Dhillon says this is only the beginning of a larger effort to dismantle race-based districting nationwide. She pointed to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who has argued that the Voting Rights Act’s reliance on racial gerrymandering conflicts with the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection.
“It would be great for America if politicians had to compete for every vote instead of hiding in safe seats,” Dhillon noted. “That’s how you get a stronger, more responsive government.”
Supreme Court Could Reshape Election Maps Nationwide
With a solid conservative majority on the Supreme Court, Dhillon believes the stage is set for a historic ruling that could permanently change how congressional districts are drawn—eliminating safe seats and forcing candidates to truly earn voter support.
If successful, Texas’ challenge could set a national precedent, ensuring that congressional maps reflect population fairness rather than partisan manipulation.
