Does Trump Still Have Your Unwavering Support?

Republicans Expecting The Worst

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) is signaling that Senate Republicans are ready to hold President Trump’s administration accountable on key decisions involving executive power. Thune revealed that there could soon be “explosive” hearings featuring senior Trump Cabinet officials, similar to the fiery clashes seen earlier this month between senators and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

This comes as President Trump continues to shake up Washington, taking bold action on the economy, law enforcement, and federal agencies — moves that have Democrats and the media on edge.

Thune Vows Tough Oversight

In a Wednesday interview, Thune stressed that Republican senators have a constitutional duty to act as a check on the executive branch.

“We have a responsibility as a coequal branch of government to make sure we’re conducting proper oversight of these decisions,” Thune said.

He pointed to the Senate Finance Committee’s explosive hearing with Secretary Kennedy earlier this month and predicted that similar high-stakes showdowns are likely in the months ahead.

“There was a very argumentative, explosive hearing a few weeks ago,” Thune said. “I expect that will continue.”

CNN Challenges GOP on Trump’s Actions

During a tense interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Thune was pressed about whether Republican leaders are doing enough to push back against President Trump’s toughest critics and boldest moves.

Bash rattled off a list of Trump’s most controversial recent actions, including:

  • Revoking broadcast licenses of TV networks accused of spreading “fake news.”
  • Urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate political opponents like New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey.
  • Firing leadership at independent agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Reserve.

She questioned whether the GOP’s lack of public criticism signaled approval of Trump’s aggressive approach.

Thune chuckled and dismissed the idea, saying much of what the public hears is “political rhetoric,” and Republicans will wait and see how the President’s words translate into action.

Backing Pam Bondi and Defending an Independent Fed

Thune strongly defended Attorney General Bondi, saying he has full faith in her judgment to uphold the law without political bias.

At the same time, Thune pushed back on President Trump’s calls for Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to lower interest rates, emphasizing the importance of an independent central bank.

“I think we ought to have an independent Fed,” Thune said firmly. “I’ve made that abundantly clear.”

The Ongoing Battle Over Executive Power

Thune reminded viewers that tensions between presidents and Congress over executive power are nothing new.

“Every president tries to push the limits of executive power,” Thune explained. “Sometimes those efforts get tested in the courts, and other times Congress steps in through oversight and its constitutional power of the purse.”

President Trump’s recent attempt to reclaim billions in federal funds already approved by Congress is expected to spark new legal and political fights in the months ahead.

Why This Matters for Conservatives

For conservative Americans, these hearings will shape the future of Trump’s America First agenda and determine how far a president can go to drain the swamp and restore accountability in Washington.

Republicans are walking a fine line: supporting Trump’s bold reforms while making sure Congress retains its constitutional authority.

Thune’s warning of “explosive hearings” means the coming months could bring major showdowns over the balance of power, with Trump’s allies and critics facing off in front of the entire nation.
