Trump Announces Layoffs?
The Trump administration is charging forward with a bold restructuring of the State Department, setting the stage for mass layoffs aimed at reducing bloated bureaucracy and creating a more effective, results-driven agency.
In an internal memo issued Thursday, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Michael Rigas confirmed that pink slips will be delivered “soon” to affected employees. “We thank these individuals for their service to the United States,” Rigas wrote, adding that the department is turning its focus toward strengthening America’s diplomatic power.
This marks the final phase of a sweeping reorganization plan spearheaded by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who unveiled the proposal in April and submitted it to Congress in May. Rubio says the goal is to build a more agile, mission-focused State Department—one capable of advancing American interests and protecting U.S. citizens on the global stage.
Hundreds of Federal Positions on the Chopping Block
While an exact number remains unconfirmed, sources inside the department say hundreds of roles are expected to be eliminated. Some notices may go out as early as Friday, signaling the Trump administration’s no-nonsense approach to streamlining government operations.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters during Thursday’s briefing that the layoffs will move quickly. “This is not going to be an extended wait—for those here in Washington or for our fellow Americans watching from around the world,” she said.
The overhaul was made possible just days after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a lower court’s injunction, clearing the way for the administration to act decisively. A draft proposal previously submitted to Congress suggested as many as 2,000 positions could be affected.
Rubio: Reform Is About Efficiency, Not Politics
Speaking from Malaysia after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Secretary Rubio made clear this isn’t a political purge—it’s a long-overdue cleanup.
“These layoffs are not about getting rid of people,” Rubio said. “They are about eliminating redundant or empty positions. In many cases, these are roles vacated through early retirement or simply no longer necessary due to changes in strategy.”
Rubio, who also serves as President Trump’s national security advisor, emphasized that the department must be leaner, faster, and more aligned with America First priorities.
A New Era of Accountability and Strength
As President Trump continues delivering on his promise to reform Washington and put American taxpayers first, the State Department shake-up is a clear sign that inefficiency and government bloat will no longer be tolerated.
With the Supreme Court’s green light and Congress informed, the administration is wasting no time in executing a plan that prioritizes national security, fiscal responsibility, and America’s leadership abroad.
For conservative Americans who have long demanded real reform in Washington, this moment marks another powerful step toward restoring order, discipline, and results in our federal government.
