Trump Gets Terrible Sign
President Donald Trump’s approval rating is once again at the center of debate, as a new survey shows a sharp divide in how Americans view his second term in the White House. The latest Economist/YouGov poll reveals that seven months into his presidency, Trump’s support remains strong among seniors and conservatives, even as Democrats and younger voters express deep disapproval.
National Poll Results: Trump Approval at 40%
The poll found that 40% of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance, while 56% disapprove, and 4% remain unsure. This split underscores the intense polarization surrounding the president — with most Americans holding firm, uncompromising views.
Conservatives Rally Behind Trump
When broken down by ideology, the contrast is striking. Nearly three-quarters of “very conservative” Americans (72%) strongly approve of Trump’s leadership. By comparison, a staggering 95% of “very liberal” voters strongly disapprove. Among Republicans overall, the president retains solid backing, while Democrats remain firmly opposed.
Seniors Remain Trump’s Strongest Base
Perhaps the most telling statistic for Trump’s re-election strength lies with older voters. According to the poll, 48% of Americans aged 65 and older approve of Trump’s presidency. By contrast, just 29% of young adults aged 18 to 29 approve. This generational divide highlights how older Americans — especially those over 50 — remain Trump’s most reliable voting bloc.
Strong Opinions on Both Sides
The survey also revealed intensity of opinion. About 23% of Americans “strongly approve” of Trump’s performance, while 47% “strongly disapprove.” These numbers reflect the deeply divided political climate that has defined U.S. politics since Trump first entered the White House.
Comparing Trump vs. Biden Poll Numbers
For context, during Joe Biden’s presidency, The Economist/YouGov found that 56% of adults strongly approved or disapproved of him, with far fewer in the middle. Today’s numbers show that Trump’s support among Republicans — especially older conservatives — remains far more durable, even after relentless attacks from Democrats and the mainstream media.
Other Surveys Show Similar Trends
The findings match other recent polls. A Reuters/Ipsos survey earlier this month placed Trump’s approval at 40%, down slightly from the start of his second term. Averages from Decision Desk HQ put Trump at 45.6% approval and 51.1% disapproval, while a Pew Research Center survey in mid-August pegged his approval at 38%.

The Economist/YouGov poll surveyed 1,568 U.S. adults between August 15–18, with a margin of error of about 3.5 percentage points.
