Republican Announces Retirement?

A major shakeup could be coming to the U.S. Senate.

Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson—a steadfast conservative and trusted ally of President Trump—hinted this week that he may not seek re-election in 2028. His departure would leave a key battleground seat wide open in a critical swing state.

At a Milwaukee Press Club event on Wednesday, Johnson was asked directly about his future in the Senate. His answer was as honest as it was revealing.

“I don’t want to run again,” Johnson said. “I’d like to dig my heels in now, set this nation on a sustainable course—and then go home.”

Johnson previously pledged to serve only two terms, but ultimately ran for a third in 2022 to help keep the Senate in Republican hands. That race, which saw him narrowly defeat radical Democrat Mandela Barnes, was one of the most hotly contested in the country.

Wisconsin—where President Trump secured victory in 2016 and battled close margins in 2020 and 2024—remains a high-priority state for both parties. And with Trump’s triumphant return to the Oval Office in 2024, speculation around the GOP’s future leadership is already gaining momentum.

“You can’t say ‘never’ in politics,” Johnson said. “But I don’t covet this job. I’m just a guy from Oshkosh trying to save this country.”

Johnson’s humble, America-first approach stands in stark contrast to the career politicians in Washington who put self-interest ahead of service. His possible retirement would be a significant loss for conservatives—and a major opportunity for Democrats aiming to flip the Senate.

His 2010 victory came during the Tea Party revolution, a wave that helped conservatives regain control of the House and challenge the Obama agenda. Ever since, Johnson has remained a fierce watchdog on government overreach, federal waste, and left-wing overreach.

With 2026 midterms on the horizon and 2028 already in the sights of political strategists, Johnson’s future could shape the balance of power for years to come.

Whether he runs or not, one thing is clear: Senator Ron Johnson has always fought for the heart and soul of America.
