Mayors Sue Trump
In a bold move to rein in government waste and restore accountability, President Trump’s administration finalized a long-overdue reform to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). But now, a group of Democrat-led cities is suing to stop it — putting politics ahead of American taxpayers once again.
The rule, officially titled the “Marketplace Integrity and Affordability” rule, was finalized in June by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It shortens the ACA open enrollment window to November 1 through December 15, rather than the extended deadline of January 15 — a move aimed at preventing last-minute abuse and improving efficiency. The rule also increases cost-sharing limits and tightens income verification to ensure only eligible Americans receive subsidized coverage.
These common-sense reforms are set to take effect in 2027.
But instead of supporting fiscal responsibility, liberal city officials from Chicago, Columbus (Ohio), and Baltimore (Maryland) are teaming up with progressive activist groups to sue the Trump administration. Their allies include Doctors for America and the Main Street Alliance, two organizations with deep ties to the left and strong support for government-controlled health care.
Leading the charge is Democracy Forward, a legal group known for challenging conservative policies in court. Their lawsuit accuses the Trump administration of violating the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) by not offering what they call “adequate justification” for the rule change — a frequent tactic used by the left to block regulatory reform.
The plaintiffs argue that limiting the enrollment window will leave more Americans uninsured and hurt doctors’ bottom lines. But supporters of the rule say the exact opposite is true — that it’s a much-needed step toward restoring healthcare integrity, protecting taxpayers, and ensuring Obamacare doesn’t become a free-for-all for fraud and abuse.
Skye Perryman, president of Democracy Forward, released a statement calling the rule “unlawful” and claimed it would “raise costs on millions of Americans.” But critics say this is more fearmongering from a group that has fought Trump at every turn, regardless of the merits.
The Bottom Line:
President Trump is working to clean up the ACA, protect hardworking Americans, and restore personal responsibility to our health care system. Meanwhile, Democrat-run cities are wasting taxpayer dollars in court to keep loopholes open — and to preserve a bloated system that many Americans no longer trust.
