Democrat Endorses Trump’s New Hire
Pennsylvania Democrat says border security should come before partisan politics as confirmation hearing approaches
Sen. John Fetterman is urging fellow Democrats to take a more open-minded approach to President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the United States Department of Homeland Security, arguing that the country needs serious leadership focused on protecting the border and keeping American communities safe.
Fetterman confirmed this week that he plans to vote in favor of Markwayne Mullin to become the next DHS secretary.
Mullin is scheduled to appear before the United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on March 18 for a confirmation hearing that could determine the future direction of U.S. immigration enforcement and border policy.
Fetterman Calls for Fair Consideration
Speaking during an interview on WABC 770 AM, Fetterman said Mullin deserves a fair evaluation rather than immediate partisan opposition.
The Pennsylvania senator noted that he and Mullin share similar views on one major issue: securing America’s border and prioritizing the removal of dangerous criminals from the country.
Fetterman emphasized that preventing violent crimes and protecting communities should be a top priority for lawmakers in both parties.
He also suggested that political polarization in Washington often leads to automatic opposition, even when nominees may have common-sense solutions.
Trump Replaces Kristi Noem at DHS
The nomination follows President Trump’s choice to remove Kristi Noem from her position leading the Department of Homeland Security.
Several Democrats welcomed the move, criticizing how immigration enforcement and disaster response were handled under her leadership.
Some lawmakers also pointed to concerns surrounding the agency’s oversight of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
However, many Democratic leaders say the issue goes beyond one individual.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said replacing leadership alone will not resolve disagreements over immigration policy and DHS strategy.
Some Democrats Signal Support for Mullin
Despite criticism from party leadership, several Democrats have acknowledged that Mullin could ultimately receive enough bipartisan support to be confirmed.
Sen. Peter Welch previously described Mullin as a capable and honest lawmaker, comments that suggest some Democrats may be willing to work with him.
The upcoming confirmation hearing will give senators the opportunity to question Mullin about his plans for immigration enforcement, border security, and the broader mission of the Department of Homeland Security.
DHS Funding Fight Adds Pressure
Mullin’s confirmation battle is taking place during a tense political standoff in Washington.
The Department of Homeland Security has faced a month-long shutdown as lawmakers remain deadlocked over funding negotiations.
Senate Democrats blocked legislation to reopen the agency for the fourth time this week. Once again, Fetterman broke with most members of his party and joined Republicans in voting to advance the measure.
The funding fight has added urgency to the debate over DHS leadership, as lawmakers grapple with border security challenges, immigration enforcement, and national security responsibilities.
What Comes Next
All eyes now turn to the March 18 confirmation hearing.
If confirmed, Mullin would take charge of one of the federal government’s most powerful agencies, overseeing border protection, immigration enforcement, disaster response, and counterterrorism operations.
With immigration and border security continuing to dominate national headlines, the outcome of the confirmation vote could have major implications for the direction of U.S. homeland security policy under President Trump.
