Ted Cruz Makes Major Endorsement
Cruz Throws His Support Behind Chip Roy
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has officially endorsed Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) for Texas Attorney General, immediately reshaping one of the most closely watched Republican primaries in the country. Cruz called Roy a “battle-tested conservative warrior” who has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with him for more than a decade.
“Chip has been by my side in countless fights for conservative values,” Cruz said. “He has the integrity, courage, and conviction to defend Texas, protect our freedoms, and uphold the rule of law.”
Chip Roy Launches Attorney General Campaign
Roy, a member of the House Freedom Caucus and a longtime Cruz ally, announced his candidacy last week. He is seeking to succeed Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), who has held the office since 2014 but is now challenging Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) in what promises to be another hard-fought GOP battle.
In his launch video, Roy declared: “Texans deserve an Attorney General who will preserve liberty, defend our Constitution, and stand strong against the radical left.”
High-Profile GOP Field Emerges
The Republican primary is expected to be a fierce contest. Alongside Roy, state Sens. Joan Huffman and Mayes Middleton are in the race, as well as Aaron Reitz, another former Cruz chief of staff.
Cruz made clear why Roy stands out: “Chip Roy is a proven fighter who never backs down. There’s no one better prepared to take on this role and hold the Biden administration and its allies accountable.”
Trump Factor Still Looms Large
While Cruz’s endorsement gives Roy strong momentum, conservatives are still waiting to see whether President Donald Trump will weigh in. Trump’s endorsement could tip the balance in what is already a heated Texas GOP showdown.
Roy has previously clashed with Paxton, even calling for his resignation in 2020 over corruption allegations, a move that highlighted his independence and commitment to ethics.
Why This Race Matters to Conservatives
The Texas Attorney General is not just the state’s top law enforcement official — it’s also a crucial defender of conservative causes in court. From border security to protecting parental rights and fighting federal overreach, the office plays a defining role in preserving Texas values.
With Cruz backing Roy, and Trump’s decision still pending, the race is quickly becoming one of the most important contests for Republicans in 2026.
