Unexpected Candidate Wins Key Election

Arizona’s 7th Congressional District just took a hard-left turn—again. Adelita Grijalva, daughter of the late far-left Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D), has clinched the Democratic nomination in a special election to replace her father, who passed away in March.

At 54 years old, Adelita is a seasoned local politician and former Pima County supervisor. But her real strength in this race came from a powerful alliance of radical-left endorsements, including Bernie Sanders, AOC, and progressive activists intent on pushing Arizona deeper into Democrat control.

The district—home to parts of Tucson and Arizona’s troubled southern border—has long been in Democrat hands. But many conservatives warn the real threat now comes from within the party itself: a socialist surge fueled by taxpayer-funded promises and woke ideology.

Backed by the Far-Left Establishment

Grijalva’s most notable opponents in the race included:

  • Daniel Hernandez, a former state lawmaker who tried to appeal to centrists,
  • And Deja Foxx, a 25-year-old social media activist whose campaign was backed by leftist youth organizations.

Many feared another far-left upset—similar to the New York socialist takeover earlier this year. But with Washington Democrats desperate to avoid embarrassment, they threw their full weight behind Grijalva.

Her endorsements included:

  • Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ)
  • Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ)
  • And far-left icons like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)

Big Government Promises, Big Taxpayer Costs

Grijalva proudly touted her role in creating a $10 million-a-year taxpayer-funded preschool program in Pima County. She claims it’s about helping children. But critics say it’s just more government overreach and spending at a time when inflation, illegal immigration, and border crime are already crushing Arizona families.

“When I say I support preschool, it’s not just talk,” Grijalva told left-leaning media. “I created an entire system where every year, $10 million is used for free preschool.”

Can Conservatives Flip the Script?

The district leaned heavily Democrat in recent elections—Kamala Harris won it by 22 points in 2024—but things are changing under President Trump’s renewed leadership. With border security, crime, and economic relief now front and center, Arizona could become a key battleground in 2026 and beyond.

The special general election is scheduled for September 23, and while Grijalva is favored, conservatives are hoping this signals a turning point.
