Senate To Alter Budget Bill
Washington, D.C. – A fierce Senate showdown is underway as Republicans move to overhaul the House’s bloated budget bill with a conservative rewrite focused on cutting government waste, protecting rural hospitals, and stopping reckless debt hikes.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) is racing to unite GOP senators around a leaner package ahead of the July 4 deadline. With Democrats poised to block any conservative reforms, every Republican vote will count.
🔻 Slashing the Spending: “House Set the Bar Too Low,” GOP Warns
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) is demanding deeper cuts to tackle Washington’s runaway spending.
“They called it a ‘big, beautiful bill,’ but it’s just big — not responsible,” Johnson said. “Our national debt is a crisis, and this doesn’t fix it.”
Johnson and other conservatives say the proposed $1.5 trillion in cuts won’t stop record deficits or protect future generations from crushing debt.
🏥 Medicaid Reform: Rural Seniors and Hospitals at Risk?
The proposed Medicaid cuts are drawing pushback from Republicans in rural states. Senators Josh Hawley (MO), Susan Collins (ME), and Lisa Murkowski (AK) warn that slashing federal support could shutter small-town hospitals and leave older Americans without care.
“We’re still reviewing the fine print, but rural hospitals in Maine could suffer,” said Collins.
Others, including Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), argue Medicaid has strayed from its mission.
“It was meant for poor kids and the chronically ill — not able-bodied adults refusing to work,” Scott said.
🔸 Did You Know? Florida stood firm against Obama’s Medicaid expansion — and it may become a national model again.
💸 SALT Cap Fight: Blue-State Bailouts?
A backroom deal in the House raised the SALT deduction cap to $40,000 — a major tax break for high earners in Democrat-led states like California and New York. But Senate Republicans say it’s an unnecessary giveaway.
“That’s not conservative policy,” said Thune. “Taxpayers in red states shouldn’t have to subsidize mismanaged blue states.”
💥 Debt Ceiling Showdown: $4 Trillion in New Debt?
The bill’s most controversial piece: raising the debt ceiling by a jaw-dropping $4 trillion. Fiscal hawk Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) says that’s unacceptable.
“Republicans will own this debt if we go along,” Paul said. “We must stop digging this hole.”
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) warns that Democrats will demand sky-high concessions if the debt limit isn’t addressed now.
⚠️ Bottom Line: Why This Matters to You
- Your tax dollars are on the line.
- Your hospital access could be impacted.
- Your children’s financial future is in jeopardy.
Republicans say it’s time to stop the spending madness, protect our seniors, and restore American priorities.
