Schumer Gets More Blame For Gov Shutdown
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) is calling out Democrat leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, accusing them of bowing to radical progressives like AOC instead of doing their jobs to keep the government running.
“This shutdown is a direct result of Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries being petrified of their left flank and wanting to show AOC, Zohran Mamdani, and every other radical leftist that they’re fighting back against President Trump,” Lawler said in a fiery interview on The Hill Sunday with NewsNation’s Chris Stirewalt.
🔥 Lawler Says Democrats Are Playing Politics with Americans’ Livelihoods
Lawler made it clear that the shutdown has nothing to do with policy — and everything to do with Democrats trying to please the far-left.
“This has nothing to do with health care,” Lawler explained. “If you want to fix health care in America, there’s real work to do. But that’s not what this is about. This is about politics — plain and simple.”
He accused the Democrat leadership of caring more about headlines and activist approval than about the millions of Americans struggling under Washington’s dysfunction.
💬 The Heated Clash Between Lawler and Jeffries
The comments came after a tense hallway confrontation between Lawler and House Minority Leader Jeffries. The two exchanged sharp words after Lawler pressed Jeffries to support a one-year extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies — a proposal Jeffries called a “nonstarter.”
Shortly after the exchange, Jeffries lashed out on The Siren Podcast, personally attacking Lawler, calling him a “malignant clown.”
“I hear that Mike Lawler, who’s a complete and total fraud, is waiting outside to step to me… Don’t come for me unless I send for you. And I did not send for this malignant clown,” Jeffries said.
Political observers say the outburst shows how divided the Democrat Party has become, as leaders try to manage the radical left while maintaining control of their caucus.
💪 Lawler: “The American People Deserve Better”
Lawler didn’t back down. He said Americans are tired of political games and want real leadership — not name-calling.
“This shutdown is about one thing — Democrat leaders trying to prove their loyalty to the far left instead of working with Republicans to keep the government open and protect taxpayers,” Lawler said.
He praised President Donald Trump’s renewed focus on fiscal responsibility and border enforcement, saying the administration is “doing what the American people elected him to do.”
📰 Bottom Line
Democrats face growing criticism for their handling of the shutdown, while Republicans like Lawler say they’re focused on accountability, border security, and protecting American families.
Lawler’s remarks reflect what many conservatives see as a Washington more worried about ideology than results — and a reminder that, under President Trump’s leadership, the fight for America’s future is far from over.
